Ø7.9 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT1

Product description and key benefits

The Ø7.9 mm NWKc twist drill with an MT1 taper is designed for precision drilling in structural steels on pillar drilling machines. The Morse taper shank provides secure, self-holding seating in the spindle — eliminating the risk of the tool slipping rotationally under increased cutting torque. With a flute length of 75 mm, the Ø7.9 Morse taper drill allows through holes to be drilled in typical shop sections and sheet metal.

Key benefits of the Ø7.9 mm metal drill bit

  • Direct mounting in an MT1 spindle — eliminates the drill chuck and its associated radial runout
  • DIN 345 — ensures full interchangeability with drills from other manufacturers and compatibility with reduction sleeves
  • Right-hand helical flutes — efficient chip evacuation from the cutting zone even when drilling holes deeper than 3×D
  • Abrasion resistance — high-speed steel (HSS) provides cutting edge durability when machining structural steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm²
  • Overall length of 156 mm — compact construction increases system rigidity and reduces vibration during drilling
  • Material versatility — drilling steel, cast iron, and aluminum — one tool for most shop tasks

The Ø7.9 Morse taper drill bit is most often selected for mounting holes in hollow sections, thick plates, and machine components. In toolrooms, it is used to prepare preliminary holes before reaming to a dowel pin fit. Holes are produced to tolerance class H12 (Ø7.900–Ø8.050 mm); if class H7 is required, additional reaming is necessary.

Spot drilling

When drilling on uneven surfaces, castings with machining allowance, or inclined planes, spot drilling with an NC 90° drill is recommended before using the Ø7.9 mm drill. The spot-drilled hole stabilizes the point position and prevents the cutting edge from slipping away from the marked location.

Material compatibility of the Ø7.9 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø7.9 mm drill bit

In S235/S355 structural steels, spot drilling is not necessary — the 118° angle provides self-centering. Spot drilling with an NC 90° drill is recommended when drilling on milled surfaces, castings with machining allowance, or difficult-to-machine materials.

A cooling and lubricating emulsion at a concentration of 5–8% is recommended. For stainless steels, increase the concentration to 8–10%. Cast iron can be drilled dry with compressed air to remove chips.

The Ø7.9 mm NWKc drill bit with an MT1 taper mounts directly in the drill press spindle — the self-holding taper eliminates slipping under high cutting torque. A straight shank drill bit requires a drill chuck, which may not transmit the full torque during heavy use.
