Ø4.5 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT1
Product description and key benefits
The Ø4.5 mm HSS twist drill with an MT1 Morse taper is a standard cutting tool used for hole machining on drilling machines with tapered spindles. High-speed steel (HSS) retains its working hardness up to 600°C, allowing stable cutting of structural and low-alloy steels without the risk of tempering the cutting edge. The Ø4.5 Morse taper drill is selected where a drill chuck cannot transmit the full torque.
Key benefits of the Ø4.5 mm metal drill bit
- Secure MT1 taper mounting — the self-holding taper conforming to DIN 345 transmits cutting torque without intermediate components — no drill chuck is required
- HSS steel resistant to temperatures up to 600°C — the cutting edge retains its working hardness at the cutting speeds recommended for structural steels and cast iron
- Flute length 47 mm — enables drilling through holes in components up to 37 mm thick without extensions
- Self-centering 118° geometry — eliminates spot drilling on flat surfaces — saves time in batch production
- Diameter tolerance class h8 — the predrilled hole is ready for reaming to H7 without an additional boring bar pass
- Full interchangeability according to DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — the drill can be replaced without adjusting the machine
The Ø4.5 Morse taper drill is used in maintenance departments for repairing and reconditioning machine components. Standard H12 hole tolerance (Ø4.500–Ø4.620 mm) is sufficient for most through holes; close fits are achieved by reaming.

Coolant for drilling steel
The Ø4.5 mm HSS drill requires cooling with a 5–8% emulsion when drilling structural steels. Dry drilling reduces cutting edge life by 50–70% and reduces hole surface quality. Minimum coolant flow: 2 l/min.

Frequently asked questions about the Ø4.5 mm drill bit
In S235/S355 structural steels, spot drilling is not necessary — the 118° angle provides self-centering. Spot drilling with an NC 90° drill is recommended when drilling on milled surfaces, castings with machining allowance, or difficult-to-machine materials.
A cooling and lubricating emulsion at a concentration of 5–8% is recommended. For stainless steels, increase the concentration to 8–10%. Cast iron can be drilled dry with compressed air to remove chips.
The Ø4.5 mm NWKc drill bit with an MT1 taper mounts directly in the drill press spindle — the self-holding taper eliminates slipping under high cutting torque. A straight shank drill bit requires a drill chuck, which may not transmit the full torque during heavy use.
