Ø13.4 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT1

Product description and key benefits

The Ø13.4 mm twist drill with an MT1 taper shank conforming to DIN 345 is a basic tool for any pillar drilling machine. Its cutting geometry with a 118° point angle provides self-centering in soft and medium-hard steels without spot drilling. The Ø13.4 Morse taper drill is used to produce mounting holes, through holes, and holes for tapping in metalworking shops and maintenance departments.

Key benefits of the Ø13.4 mm metal drill bit

  • Direct mounting in an MT1 spindle — eliminates the drill chuck and its associated radial runout
  • DIN 345 — ensures full interchangeability with drills from other manufacturers and compatibility with reduction sleeves
  • Right-hand helical flutes — efficient chip evacuation from the cutting zone even when drilling holes deeper than 3×D
  • Abrasion resistance — high-speed steel (HSS) provides cutting edge durability when machining structural steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm²
  • Overall length of 189 mm — compact construction increases system rigidity and reduces vibration during drilling
  • Material versatility — drilling steel, cast iron, and aluminum — one tool for most shop tasks

The Ø13.4 mm Morse taper drill is used in metalworking shops for bolt and dowel holes in steel components. In batch production, it provides repeatable dimensional accuracy within tolerance class H12 (Ø13.400–Ø13.580 mm). H7 fits require finish reaming.

Spot drilling

When drilling on uneven surfaces, castings with machining allowance, or inclined planes, spot drilling with an NC 90° drill is recommended before using the Ø13.4 mm drill. The spot-drilled hole stabilizes the point position and prevents the cutting edge from slipping away from the marked location.

Material compatibility of the Ø13.4 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø13.4 mm drill bit

Yes — using an MT1→MT2 reduction sleeve. The sleeve ensures proper seating of the taper in the larger spindle socket. Use a correctly sized drill drift for removal.

The maximum drilling depth is the flute length l2 = 108 mm minus the drill point length (approximately 4 mm). The effective usable depth is therefore approximately 104 mm.

In S235/S355 structural steels, spot drilling is not necessary — the 118° angle provides self-centering. Spot drilling with an NC 90° drill is recommended when drilling on milled surfaces, castings with machining allowance, or difficult-to-machine materials.
