Ø6.2 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT1

Product description and key benefits

The Ø6.2 mm twist drill with an MT1 taper shank solves the problem of tool slippage in a three-jaw chuck under full load. The Morse taper is self-holding — the higher the cutting torque, the more securely it seats in the spindle. The Ø6.2 Morse taper drill for a diameter of 6.2 mm ensures stability even during prolonged batch drilling at a single workstation.

Key benefits of the Ø6.2 mm metal drill bit

  • MT1 taper — direct mounting — eliminates the drill chuck as a source of radial runout and tool slippage
  • HSS cutting edge, 63–65 HRC — hardness that ensures stable cutting of steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm² throughout the interval between sharpenings
  • Right-hand helical flutes — effective chip evacuation from the cutting zone — essential when drilling holes deeper than 2×D
  • Compact 144 mm design — shorter tool overhang provides greater rigidity and less vibration
  • Repeated reconditioning — the HSS cutting edge can be resharpened 8–12 times while retaining its geometry — at l2 = 63 mm, the resharpening allowance is approximately 7 mm
  • Sleeve compatibility — use on drilling machines with MT1 to MT2 spindles using reduction sleeves

The Ø6.2 Morse taper drill is suitable for series production of steel components, where repeatable hole dimensions determine assembly quality. With H12 tolerance at Ø6.200–Ø6.350 mm, holes require no additional machining for bolted connections. More precise fits are achieved with a finishing reamer.

Spot drilling

When drilling on uneven surfaces, castings with machining allowance, or inclined planes, spot drilling with an NC 90° drill is recommended before using the Ø6.2 mm drill. The spot-drilled hole stabilizes the point position and prevents the cutting edge from slipping away from the marked location.

Material compatibility of the Ø6.2 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø6.2 mm drill bit

The Ø6.2 mm NWKc drill bit with an MT1 taper mounts directly in the drill press spindle — the self-holding taper eliminates slipping under high cutting torque. A straight shank drill bit requires a drill chuck, which may not transmit the full torque during heavy use.

Yes — using an MT1→MT2 reduction sleeve. The sleeve ensures proper seating of the taper in the larger spindle socket. Use a correctly sized drill drift for removal.

The maximum drilling depth is the flute length l2 = 63 mm minus the drill point length (approximately 2 mm). The effective usable depth is therefore approximately 61 mm.
