Ø41.5 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT4
Product description and key benefits
The Ø41.5 mm NWKc metal drill bit with an MT4 Morse taper falls within the range where the volume of material removed per centimeter of depth requires particular attention to chip evacuation and cooling. The MT4 taper transmits the torque generated at diameters of 32–50 mm without the risk of slippage. The Ø41.5 Morse taper drill bit with a flute length of 205 mm enables through drilling in components with thicknesses encountered in heavy machinery manufacturing.
Key benefits of the Ø41.5 mm metal drill bit
- Secure MT4 taper mounting — the self-holding taper conforming to DIN 345 transmits cutting torque without intermediate components — no drill chuck is required
- HSS steel resistant to temperatures up to 600°C — the cutting edge retains its working hardness at the cutting speeds recommended for structural steels and cast iron
- Flute length 205 mm — enables drilling through holes in components up to 195 mm thick without extensions
- Self-centering 118° geometry — eliminates spot drilling on flat surfaces — saves time in batch production
- Diameter tolerance class h8 — the predrilled hole is ready for reaming to H7 without an additional boring bar pass
- Full interchangeability according to DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — the drill can be replaced without adjusting the machine
The Ø41.5 mm drill bit is used in steel fabrication plants, maintenance departments, and industrial machinery service shops. It is suitable for drilling mounting holes in foundation plates, pipeline flanges, and machine housings. It normally produces holes to tolerance grade H12 (Ø41.500–Ø41.750 mm); holes requiring an H7 fit need additional reaming.

Cooling for large diameters
At a diameter of 41.5 mm, the volume of chips generated per centimeter of depth is approximately 13.5 cm³. Use a 6–8% emulsion at a minimum flow rate of 6 l/min. Without pressurized cooling, limit the depth per pass to 62 mm.

Frequently asked questions about the Ø41.5 mm drill bit
Depth greater than 3×D (124 mm): reduce feed by 30–50%, retract every 1×D, and use a 6–8% emulsion at a minimum flow rate of 6 l/min. Peck drilling prevents chips from jamming in the flutes.
1) Clean the taper and spindle socket. 2) Check runout (maximum 0.03 mm). 3) Replace the drill if the taper is damaged or worn. 4) Do not stack reduction sleeves (e.g., MT4→MT3→MT5).
For diameters up to approximately 40 mm, drilling into solid material is possible after spot drilling with an NC 90° drill. Above 40 mm, a Ø20–25 mm pilot hole is recommended to reduce axial force by 40–50% and eliminate vibration from the chisel edge.
