Ø8 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT1

Product description and key benefits

Choosing a Ø8 mm twist drill with an MT1 taper instead of a straight-shank equivalent is justified wherever the drilling machine has a tapered spindle. Seating the tool directly in the spindle simplifies the process — eliminating the chuck reduces setup operations and the risk of runout. The Ø8 Morse taper drill conforming to DIN 345 fits any MT1 spindle, regardless of the machine tool manufacturer.

Key benefits of the Ø8 mm metal drill bit

  • Secure MT1 taper mounting — the self-holding taper conforming to DIN 345 transmits cutting torque without intermediate components — no drill chuck is required
  • HSS steel resistant to temperatures up to 600°C — the cutting edge retains its working hardness at the cutting speeds recommended for structural steels and cast iron
  • Flute length 75 mm — enables drilling through holes in components up to 65 mm thick without extensions
  • Self-centering 118° geometry — eliminates spot drilling on flat surfaces — saves time in batch production
  • Diameter tolerance class h8 — the predrilled hole is ready for reaming to H7 without an additional boring bar pass
  • Full interchangeability according to DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — the drill can be replaced without adjusting the machine

The Ø8 Morse taper drill is used in maintenance departments for repairing and reconditioning machine components. Standard H12 hole tolerance (Ø8.000–Ø8.150 mm) is sufficient for most through holes; close fits are achieved by reaming.

Spot drilling

When drilling on uneven surfaces, castings with machining allowance, or inclined planes, spot drilling with an NC 90° drill is recommended before using the Ø8 mm drill. The spot-drilled hole stabilizes the point position and prevents the cutting edge from slipping away from the marked location.

Material compatibility of the Ø8 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø8 mm drill bit

The Ø8 mm NWKc drill bit with an MT1 taper mounts directly in the drill press spindle — the self-holding taper eliminates slipping under high cutting torque. A straight shank drill bit requires a drill chuck, which may not transmit the full torque during heavy use.

Yes — using an MT1→MT2 reduction sleeve. The sleeve ensures proper seating of the taper in the larger spindle socket. Use a correctly sized drill drift for removal.

The maximum drilling depth is the flute length l2 = 75 mm minus the drill point length (approximately 2 mm). The effective usable depth is therefore approximately 73 mm.
