Manufacturers of inserts for folding multi-flute cutting drills categorize carbide grades according to ISO designations, which specifies what type of material each insert is intended for. Most often, a cutting insert has a difference in thickness of about 1-2 mm. This is very disadvantageous from the customer's point of view, because these tools are much more expensive than standard ones, and the design is neither innovative nor more efficient than standard inserts, as manufacturers claim. According to the ISO standard, materials have the following designations:

P - steel marked in blue ,
M - stainless steel, marked in yellow,
K - cast iron, described by the color red,
N - aluminum and non-ferrous materials described by green color,
S - heat-resistant materials marked by honey color,
H - hardened steels marked by the gray color.

What is worth knowing about cutting insert designations according to ISO?

Many questions are raised by the designation used in the naming of forked inserts. Therefore, it is worth knowing that each letter contained in the designation of inserts has its own meaning. Manufacturers using the designation, for example, in the WCMX folding drill insert, specify:

the letter W- specifies the shape of the insert and the angle of the corner ( in the case of the letter W, it is an angle of 80 degrees)
the letter C- specifies the angle of application normal ( in the case of the letter C it is an angle of 7 degrees)
letter M- specifies the insert accuracy/tolerance in mm (in this example +/- 0.025mm)
the letter X- specifies the shape of the contact surface and insert clamping (in the case of the letter X, this is a special design specified by the manufacturer).

Other carbide designations specify analogously:

side length,
thickness of the insert,
the radius of the corner of the cutting insert with any shears
the shape of the corner of the cutting insert and, in some cases, the direction of cutting

Manufacturers, after specifying the above parameters in letter and then digital symbols, specify in letter or digital symbols the geometry of the chipbreaker and, in turn, the grade of the manufactured multi-cutting insert with its coatings.

What type of cutting inserts to choose?

Multicutting inserts are made by sintering carbides of hard-to-melt metals such as tungsten or titanium with bonding metals (most often cobalt, sometimes to reduce the cost of production it can be nickel or vanadium). The abbreviation VHM (from German Vollhartmetall) is used to refer to tools made entirely of carbide. For the production of inserts for folding drills, such as WCMX, high quality carbides were used, as well as modern coating methods. As a result, the tools we offer are characterized by very high hardness, wear resistance, and the ability to cut very hard and hard-to-machine materials. They are also suitable for working at very high temperatures.
