Ø3.1 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT1
Product description and key benefits
The Ø3.1 mm NWKc twist drill is distinguished by its mounting method — the MT1 Morse taper eliminates the intermediate component between the tool and the spindle. This results in lower radial runout and improved repeatability of hole dimensions. The Ø3.1 Morse taper drill with a high-speed steel (HSS) cutting edge retains its working hardness up to 600°C, allowing drilling without the risk of tempering the cutting edge.
Key benefits of the Ø3.1 mm metal drill bit
- Direct mounting in an MT1 spindle — eliminates the drill chuck and its associated radial runout
- DIN 345 — ensures full interchangeability with drills from other manufacturers and compatibility with reduction sleeves
- Right-hand helical flutes — efficient chip evacuation from the cutting zone even when drilling holes deeper than 3×D
- Abrasion resistance — high-speed steel (HSS) provides cutting edge durability when machining structural steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm²
- Overall length of 117 mm — compact construction increases system rigidity and reduces vibration during drilling
- Material versatility — drilling steel, cast iron, and aluminum — one tool for most shop tasks
The Ø3.1 Morse taper drill is suitable for series production of steel components, where repeatable hole dimensions determine assembly quality. With H12 tolerance at Ø3.100–Ø3.220 mm, holes require no additional machining for bolted connections. More precise fits are achieved with a finishing reamer.

Checking radial runout
Before drilling with the Ø3.1 mm drill, check radial runout in the spindle — the maximum permissible value is 0.02 mm. Excessive runout reduces hole quality and accelerates cutting edge wear. The taper and spindle socket must be clean and dry.

Frequently asked questions about the Ø3.1 mm drill bit
A cooling and lubricating emulsion at a concentration of 5–8% is recommended. For stainless steels, increase the concentration to 8–10%. Cast iron can be drilled dry with compressed air to remove chips.
The Ø3.1 mm NWKc drill bit with an MT1 taper mounts directly in the drill press spindle — the self-holding taper eliminates slipping under high cutting torque. A straight shank drill bit requires a drill chuck, which may not transmit the full torque during heavy use.
Yes — using an MT1→MT2 reduction sleeve. The sleeve ensures proper seating of the taper in the larger spindle socket. Use a correctly sized drill drift for removal.
