Ø72 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT5
Product description and key benefits
The Ø72 mm HSS twist drill with an MT5 Morse taper is designed for use on machine tools with a rigid construction and sufficient drive power. At diameters above 50 mm, the chisel edge generates a significant portion of the axial force — pilot holes reduce this effect and improve tool guidance stability. The Ø72 Morse taper drill is used in machinery plants, shipyards, and valve and fitting factories.
Key benefits of the Ø72 mm metal drill bit
- Direct mounting in an MT5 spindle — eliminates the drill chuck as a source of runout and slippage
- Flute length 255 mm — drilling through holes in workpieces up to 240 mm thick in a single pass
- DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — full interchangeability
- Type N right-hand helical flutes — a compromise between web rigidity and flute capacity
- h8 diameter fit — preliminary holes for reaming to H7 without additional boring
- Extended tool life with emulsion cooling — coolant increases cutting edge life by up to a factor of 2.5 compared with dry drilling
The Ø72 mm Morse taper drill is used in heavy machinery manufacturing to produce holes in castings, machine bodies, and thick plates. In shipyards, it is used to machine hull components and hatch cover mechanisms. H12 tolerance (Ø72.000–Ø72.300 mm); more precise holes require boring.

REDUCTION SLEEVES COMPATIBLE WITH THE Ø72 MM DRILL BIT:
| ✓ | MT5 → MT6 — for a spindle with an MT6 socket |
| ✓ | MT5 → MT4 — not recommended (socket capacity below the operating load) |
| ✓ | MT5 drill drift — for removing the drill bit from the spindle |

Vibration at large diameters
At a diameter of 72 mm, the risk of vibration is increased — the long chisel edge generates an asymmetrical load. A Ø20–25 mm pilot hole eliminates chisel edge engagement. Additionally: check spindle runout (max. 0.03 mm) and secure the workpiece with rigid fixtures.

Frequently asked questions about the Ø72 mm drill bit
H12 tolerance as standard. Reaming or boring is required for H7 or tighter fits — a twist drill cannot achieve these tolerances without finishing.
At least 4 kW of motor power and an MT5 or larger spindle. When drilling S355 steel, torque at the drill reaches 180 Nm — bench and magnetic drilling machines do not provide sufficient rigidity. The optimal machine is a box-column or radial drilling machine with power feed.
Yes — it is required. A Ø20–25 mm pilot hole eliminates cutting by the chisel edge, which at a diameter of 72 mm generates 60–70% of the total axial force and severe vibration.
