Ø6.6 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT1

Product description and key benefits

The Ø6.6 mm NWKc twist drill with an MT1 taper is designed for precision drilling in structural steels on pillar drilling machines. The Morse taper shank provides secure, self-holding seating in the spindle — eliminating the risk of the tool slipping rotationally under increased cutting torque. With a flute length of 63 mm, the Ø6.6 Morse taper drill allows through holes to be drilled in typical shop sections and sheet metal.

Key benefits of the Ø6.6 mm metal drill bit

  • Self-holding Morse taper — MT1 transmits torque without slippage — essential for prolonged batch drilling
  • HSS steel with a hardness of 63–65 HRC — the cutting edge retains its sharpness throughout the tool's service interval between sharpenings
  • Flute length 63 mm — the maximum drilling depth allows typical shop sections and sheet metal to be machined in a single pass
  • 118° point angle — self-centering in soft steels — eliminates the need for spot drilling on flat surfaces
  • Diameter tolerance h8 — repeatable hole size in batch and single-part production
  • Cutting edge reconditioning — repeated resharpening extends tool life — at l2 = 63 mm, the resharpening allowance is approximately 7 mm

The Ø6.6 Morse taper drill is suitable for series production of steel components, where repeatable hole dimensions determine assembly quality. With H12 tolerance at Ø6.600–Ø6.750 mm, holes require no additional machining for bolted connections. More precise fits are achieved with a finishing reamer.

Drill sharpening

Sharpen the Ø6.6 mm drill bit on a tool grinder, maintaining the 118° point angle and cutting edge symmetry. Asymmetric sharpening enlarges the hole diameter and loads the spindle unevenly. Each sharpening reduces the flute length by approximately 1–2 mm.

Material compatibility of the Ø6.6 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø6.6 mm drill bit

The Ø6.6 mm NWKc drill bit with an MT1 taper mounts directly in the drill press spindle — the self-holding taper eliminates slipping under high cutting torque. A straight shank drill bit requires a drill chuck, which may not transmit the full torque during heavy use.

Yes — using an MT1→MT2 reduction sleeve. The sleeve ensures proper seating of the taper in the larger spindle socket. Use a correctly sized drill drift for removal.

The maximum drilling depth is the flute length l2 = 63 mm minus the drill point length (approximately 2 mm). The effective usable depth is therefore approximately 61 mm.
