Ø3.5 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT1

Product description and key benefits

The Ø3.5 mm NWKc twist drill combines two features important in everyday shop work: secure taper mounting and the ability to be resharpened repeatedly. The MT1 taper provides direct contact with the spindle — without play or slippage. With a flute length of 39 mm, the Ø3.5 Morse taper drill allows machining of workpieces of standard thicknesses, while the 118° point angle eliminates the need for preliminary spot drilling on flat surfaces.

Key benefits of the Ø3.5 mm metal drill bit

  • Secure MT1 taper mounting — the self-holding taper conforming to DIN 345 transmits cutting torque without intermediate components — no drill chuck is required
  • HSS steel resistant to temperatures up to 600°C — the cutting edge retains its working hardness at the cutting speeds recommended for structural steels and cast iron
  • Flute length 39 mm — enables drilling through holes in components up to 29 mm thick without extensions
  • Self-centering 118° geometry — eliminates spot drilling on flat surfaces — saves time in batch production
  • Diameter tolerance class h8 — the predrilled hole is ready for reaming to H7 without an additional boring bar pass
  • Full interchangeability according to DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — the drill can be replaced without adjusting the machine

The Ø3.5 mm Morse taper drill is used in metalworking shops for bolt and dowel holes in steel components. In batch production, it provides repeatable dimensional accuracy within tolerance class H12 (Ø3.500–Ø3.620 mm). H7 fits require finish reaming.

Drill sharpening

Sharpen the Ø3.5 mm drill bit on a tool grinder, maintaining the 118° point angle and cutting edge symmetry. Asymmetric sharpening enlarges the hole diameter and loads the spindle unevenly. Each sharpening reduces the flute length by approximately 1–2 mm.

Material compatibility of the Ø3.5 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø3.5 mm drill bit

Yes — using an MT1→MT2 reduction sleeve. The sleeve ensures proper seating of the taper in the larger spindle socket. Use a correctly sized drill drift for removal.

The maximum drilling depth is the flute length l2 = 39 mm minus the drill point length (approximately 1 mm). The effective usable depth is therefore approximately 38 mm.

In S235/S355 structural steels, spot drilling is not necessary — the 118° angle provides self-centering. Spot drilling with an NC 90° drill is recommended when drilling on milled surfaces, castings with machining allowance, or difficult-to-machine materials.
