Fanar taps - Technical articles

Taps are multi-tools used for making internal threads in previously drilled holes. The work of a tapping tool resembles that of a screw driven into a hole, whose blades formed by milling longitudinal chip grooves shape the workpiece thread by cutting the material.

Wide range for taps

When machining, a single through or blind tapping tool with a full thread outline is most often used to cut a thread in a hole, while when machining by hand, a set of tapping tools, usually consisting of two (ripper and finisher) or three tools (ripper, intermediate and finisher), used to produce a thread in two or three machining passes, respectively.

With regard to the type of thread to be cut, we can distinguish taps for cylindrical and conical threads, and additionally for metric, inch, trapezoidal or pipe threads. Taps are most often made of HSS and HSSE (with cobalt addition) and HSSEPM (cobalt powder high speed steel). They come in a variety of uncoated as well as coated variants, and in different variations of the nut.

Variants of taps

Machinetaps currently come in two nut variants: nut B and nut C. The departure from the A, C, D type of nut was dictated by the desire to reduce production costs. At the moment we have mainly two available nuts, but nut C can also appear as a torsion tapping, which gives in practice 3 types of taps.

The B nut is a straight nut and is used for through holes. A tapping tool with a B nut has a notch at the beginning of the tapping tool, which pushes the chip down the hole during tapping. This makes it easier to move the chip out of the hole, which translates into less likelihood of breaking the tapping tool or damaging the thread.

The C nut is a short nut that comes in two types: straight and twist. The straight nut is designed for both through-holes and blind holes. It has straight chip grooves that store chips during thread machining. It is a universal tapping tool for both through-holes and blind holes, but it is also not the best option when threading a large number of holes.

The C torsion cap is a cap that is also short for machining blind holes. It has torsion chip grooves, which lead the chips up the hole. Thanks to this solution, the chips do not stay in the hole when threading through holes, and high-performance threading is possible.
