Ø55 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT5
Product description and key benefits
The Ø55 mm NWKc twist drill with an MT5 taper operates in the large-diameter range, where chip evacuation and cutting zone cooling become critical to cutting edge life. The MT5 taper with a diameter of 44.40 mm provides rigidity proportional to the forces generated when machining holes larger than 50 mm. The Ø55 Morse taper drill requires a box-column or radial drilling machine with power feed.
Key benefits of the Ø55 mm metal drill bit
- Secure MT5 taper mounting — the self-holding taper conforming to DIN 345 transmits cutting torque without intermediate components — no drill chuck is required
- HSS steel resistant to temperatures up to 600°C — the cutting edge retains its working hardness at the cutting speeds recommended for structural steels and cast iron
- Flute length 230 mm — enables drilling through holes in components up to 220 mm thick without extensions
- Self-centering 118° geometry — eliminates spot drilling on flat surfaces — saves time in batch production
- Diameter tolerance class h8 — the predrilled hole is ready for reaming to H7 without an additional boring bar pass
- Full interchangeability according to DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — the drill can be replaced without adjusting the machine
The Ø55 Morse taper drill is used in heavy machinery manufacturing plants, ship repair yards, and industrial valve and fitting factories. Typical applications include holes for mechanical anchors in foundation plates, holes in gearbox bearing end shields, and bores for guide bushings. Hole tolerance class H12 (Ø55.000–Ø55.300 mm); H7 and tighter fits are achieved by boring.

Minimum machine power for diameters of 50+ mm
The Ø55 mm drill requires a machine with a power rating above 4 kW and an MT5 or larger spindle. Torque when drilling S355 steel reaches 110 Nm — pillar drilling machines rated below 3 kW will not provide stable cutting conditions.

Frequently asked questions about the Ø55 mm drill bit
At least 4 kW of motor power and an MT5 or larger spindle. When drilling S355 steel, torque at the drill reaches 137 Nm — bench and magnetic drilling machines do not provide sufficient rigidity. The optimal machine is a box-column or radial drilling machine with power feed.
Yes — it is required. A Ø20–25 mm pilot hole eliminates cutting by the chisel edge, which at a diameter of 55 mm generates 60–70% of the total axial force and severe vibration.
1) Drill a Ø20–25 mm pilot hole. 2) Check runout in the spindle (maximum 0.03 mm). 3) Clamp the workpiece rigidly. 4) Use power feed — manual feed causes uneven pressure and resonance.
