They are very universal tools because they find their use in both milling machines and lathes and even in vertical and ordinary drilling machines. Double-end milling cutters for grooving have only cylindrical shank and their dimensions are described by the Polish PN standard called NFPg, but also by the German DIN 327 standard.

When ordering a groove milling cutter in this standard and a certain diameter, we can be sure what tool (dimensionally) we will receive. These milling cutters are available in several designs, as: straight face milling cutters, radius milling cutters. Radius milling cutters are also double-edged, but their radius is exactly half the diameter of the cutter, i.e. R=2*D. Radius milling cutters also have the possibility of both side and face milling. DIN 327 milling cutters have a very distinctive feature when it comes to blades. In order to reduce the load during cutting but also to increase the stability of machining, asymmetrical blades are used. This solution is slightly more expensive in the production process, but gives very good results in the form of increased tool life. These cutters are designed for making keyways with multiple passes of the tool. They can do this work without first drilling into the material. They can plunge into solid material completely vertically.

Double-feather burrs come in two varieties of design, HSS, and HSSE (with 5% cobalt added) or HSSE PM. HSS cutters have the ability to machine materials up to 35 HRC, cobalt high speed steel up to max. 37 HRC including stainless steel and cast iron. On the other hand, HSSEPM powder steel groove milling cutters can mill in materials up to 40 HRC, in addition, they tolerate machine vibration relatively well if any.
