Ø47 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT4

Product description and key benefits

The Ø47 mm twist drill is an industrial NWKc cutting tool designed for drilling large-diameter holes in structural and alloy steels. The MT4 Morse taper shank provides rigid, self-holding mounting in the spindle — without the risk of slipping at maximum cutting torque. The Ø47 Morse taper drill is suitable for pillar and box-column drilling machines used in industrial facilities.

Key benefits of the Ø47 mm metal drill bit

  • Morse taper MT4 — self-holding mounting in the spindle eliminates slipping under full cutting torque
  • HSS high-speed steel — the cutting edge retains its working hardness up to 600°C in structural and low-alloy steels
  • Full compliance with DIN 345 — ensures interchangeability and compatibility with reduction sleeves and Morse taper spindles
  • 118° point angle — versatile cutting geometry performs well in structural and medium-hard steels, cast iron, and aluminum
  • Diameter tolerance h8 — repeatable hole size within a tolerance class that ensures consistent parameters in series production
  • Resharpenable cutting edges — repeated sharpening on a grinder while maintaining the 118° angle and cutting edge symmetry

The Ø47 mm Morse taper drill bit is used for heavy-duty machining — manufacturing machine frames, special-purpose vehicle chassis, and components of metallurgical equipment. The tool operates under conditions where hole quality depends on clamping rigidity and stable cutting parameters. Tolerance grade H12, Ø47.000–Ø47.250 mm.

Minimum machine tool power

The Ø47 mm drill requires a drilling machine with at least 2.2 kW of power and power spindle feed. Stability is difficult to maintain with manual feed — uneven pressure leads to vibration and accelerated cutting edge wear. A box-column or radial drilling machine is recommended.

Material compatibility of the Ø47 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø47 mm drill bit

For diameters up to approximately 40 mm, drilling into solid material is possible after spot drilling with an NC 90° drill. Above 40 mm, a Ø20–25 mm pilot hole is recommended to reduce axial force by 40–50% and eliminate vibration from the chisel edge.

When drilling S355 steel with a Ø47 mm drill, the torque is approximately 117 Nm. This requires a drilling machine with a minimum power rating of 2.8 kW and power spindle feed.

For a drilling machine with an MT5 spindle: MT4→MT5 sleeve. For a smaller MT3 spindle: MT4→MT3 sleeve (check that the operating load does not exceed the socket capacity). For removal: MT4 drill drift.
