Ø27 mm HSSE twist drill – MT3 Morse taper

Product description and key benefits

The Ø27 mm twist drill with an MT3 Morse taper belongs to the group of tools designed for drilling machines with MT3 or larger spindles. At this diameter, the axial force when drilling S355 steel is several kN — a value requiring rigid clamping and a stable machine base. The Ø27 Morse taper drill is used to produce holes for foundation bolts, pins, and bearing bushings in machine components.

Key benefits of the Ø27 mm metal drill bit

  • 5% cobalt in the HSS matrix — raises the tempering temperature to 650°C — 50°C higher than standard HSS
  • Direct mounting in an MT3 spindle — eliminates the chuck as a source of runout — particularly important when drilling stainless steels, where runout reduces surface quality
  • Drilling austenitic steels — the HSSE cutting edge handles work hardening in 304/316/321 steels
  • h8 diameter tolerance — repeatable hole size even in difficult-to-machine materials
  • Conforms to DIN 345 — dimensions identical to HSS — a replacement for use in existing machining cells
  • Repeated resharpening — HSSE steel retains its properties after the cutting edge is reground on a tool grinder

The Ø27 Morse taper drill is used mainly in steel construction — industrial buildings, bridges, and viaducts — where holes with diameters of 23–31 mm are standard for assembly connections. In repair shops, it is used to restore holes in machinery. H12 tolerance (Ø27.000–Ø27.210 mm); H7 fits are achieved with a reamer.

Coolant selection for drilling diameters of 23–31 mm

At a diameter of 27 mm, the volume of chips removed is considerable — the helical flutes must evacuate a large amount of material. Use an emulsion at a concentration of 6–8% with a flow rate of at least 5 l/min. Without pressurized coolant, limit the depth of each pass to 54 mm.

Material compatibility of the Ø27 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 30%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø27 mm drill bit

The HSS drill can handle stainless steel with Vc reduced by 40% and ample coolant. For regular INOX machining, an HSSE (cobalt) drill of the same diameter is recommended.

A pillar or box-column drill press with an MT3 spindle and a power rating of at least 1.5 kW. For diameters above 25 mm, power feed is recommended — manual feed will not provide uniform pressure.

An HSSE drill bit contains 5% cobalt, which increases heat resistance from 600°C to 650°C. The practical difference: HSSE performs much better in stainless and difficult-to-machine steels. When machining only carbon steels, the difference in tool life is minimal.
