How the type B through-hole chamfer pushes chips down the hole

Chips exit at the bottom instead of returning through the thread

The form B chamfer for through holes has a chip breaker at the tip of the tap – an angled cut in the cutting edges. The chip breaker directs the chip down the hole, ahead of the tap tip. The chip curls into a coil, breaks into short pieces and exits the hole on the other side of the workpiece. The threads already cut remain clean because the chip does not pass through them on its way up. The M10x1 tap has a reduced shank according to DIN 374: diameter 7 mm, square size 5.5 mm.

M10x1 DIN 374 tap – diagram of chip movement and rotation direction during tapping
1
Straight flute – chips do not enter it; the flute carries lubricant to the cutting edges.
2
The chip breaker at the tip of the tap directs chips down the hole.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
B chamfer: 3.5–5.5 incomplete threads on the entry taper.
5
The chips break into segments: individual pieces at the top of the hole, with progressively more farther down. They fall out below the workpiece.
6
Feed 1 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M10x1 thread.

M10x1 fine-thread machine tap – HSSE for precision engineering

The M10x1 fine-thread machine tap is a specialized tool for cutting internal threads with a reduced pitch of 1 mm in the popular M10 diameter used in precision engineering and hydraulics. Its HSSE high-speed steel construction with 5% cobalt guarantees a hardness of 65-67 HRC and optimum tool life when machining difficult-to-machine materials requiring high precision. The M10x1 fine thread is used in precision engineering, hydraulics, and pneumatics where precise adjustment and high resistance to loosening under vibration are required. The short shank in accordance with DIN 374 ensures compact tool dimensions.

Advantages and applications of the M10x1 fine thread machine tap

  • Fine thread with a 1 mm pitch provides greater adjustment precision and 50% higher tensile strength than the M10x1.5 coarse thread, with better resistance to loosening
  • Increased load-bearing area of the thread of the fine thread results in better resistance to loosening under vibration and more uniform load distribution in the threaded joint
  • HSSE steel with 5% cobalt guarantees a hardness of 65-67 HRC and thermal resistance up to 650°C, extending cutting edge life under intensive tool use
  • The 6H tolerance in accordance with DIN 374 ensures accurate threads and full interchangeability with fasteners used in industrial hydraulics and pneumatics
  • Short shank in accordance with DIN 374, compatible with ER16 and ER20 collet chucks and tapping chucks with axial compensation for CNC machining centers
  • The recommended tap drill diameter of 9 mm for the M10x1 metric fine thread ensures optimal thread engagement with minimal tool load

The M10x1 machine tap is used in industrial hydraulics, pneumatics, precision engineering, and wherever greater strength or adjustment precision than the M10x1.5 coarse thread provides is required. Form B with straight flutes directs chips forward when tapping through holes. Cooling with an oil emulsion at a concentration of 6-8% is recommended for optimum tool life.

Frequently asked questions

The M10x1 fine thread provides approximately 50% higher tensile strength, better adjustment precision, and greater resistance to loosening, with a slightly longer assembly time.

The recommended tap drill diameter for the M10x1 metric fine thread is 9 mm — larger than for the M10x1.5 coarse thread (8.5 mm) due to the finer pitch.

The M10x1 thread is used in industrial hydraulics, pneumatics, precision engineering, and wherever greater strength or adjustment precision than a coarse thread provides is required.
