Ø3.7 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT1
Product description and key benefits
The Ø3.7 mm twist drill with an MT1 taper shank conforming to DIN 345 is a basic tool for any pillar drilling machine. Its cutting geometry with a 118° point angle provides self-centering in soft and medium-hard steels without spot drilling. The Ø3.7 Morse taper drill is used to produce mounting holes, through holes, and holes for tapping in metalworking shops and maintenance departments.
Key benefits of the Ø3.7 mm metal drill bit
- Secure MT1 taper mounting — the self-holding taper conforming to DIN 345 transmits cutting torque without intermediate components — no drill chuck is required
- HSS steel resistant to temperatures up to 600°C — the cutting edge retains its working hardness at the cutting speeds recommended for structural steels and cast iron
- Flute length 39 mm — enables drilling through holes in components up to 29 mm thick without extensions
- Self-centering 118° geometry — eliminates spot drilling on flat surfaces — saves time in batch production
- Diameter tolerance class h8 — the predrilled hole is ready for reaming to H7 without an additional boring bar pass
- Full interchangeability according to DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — the drill can be replaced without adjusting the machine
The Ø3.7 Morse taper drill bit is most often selected for mounting holes in hollow sections, thick plates, and machine components. In toolrooms, it is used to prepare preliminary holes before reaming to a dowel pin fit. Holes are produced to tolerance class H12 (Ø3.700–Ø3.820 mm); if class H7 is required, additional reaming is necessary.

Coolant for drilling steel
The Ø3.7 mm HSS drill requires cooling with a 5–8% emulsion when drilling structural steels. Dry drilling reduces cutting edge life by 50–70% and reduces hole surface quality. Minimum coolant flow: 2 l/min.

Frequently asked questions about the Ø3.7 mm drill bit
The Ø3.7 mm NWKc drill bit with an MT1 taper mounts directly in the drill press spindle — the self-holding taper eliminates slipping under high cutting torque. A straight shank drill bit requires a drill chuck, which may not transmit the full torque during heavy use.
Yes — using an MT1→MT2 reduction sleeve. The sleeve ensures proper seating of the taper in the larger spindle socket. Use a correctly sized drill drift for removal.
The maximum drilling depth is the flute length l2 = 39 mm minus the drill point length (approximately 1 mm). The effective usable depth is therefore approximately 38 mm.
