How the type B through-hole chamfer pushes chips down the hole

Chips exit at the bottom instead of returning through the thread

The form B through-hole chamfer has a chip breaker at the front of the tap – an angled cut in the cutting edges. The chip breaker directs chips down the hole, ahead of the tap tip. The chip curls into a coil, breaks into short pieces, and exits the hole on the other side of the workpiece. Threads already cut remain clean because chips do not pass through them on their way up. The M6 x1 tap has a reinforced shank in accordance with DIN 371: diameter 6 mm, square 4.9 mm.

1
Straight flute – chips do not enter it; the flute carries lubricant to the cutting edges.
2
The chip breaker at the tip of the tap directs chips down the hole.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
B chamfer: 3.5–5.5 incomplete threads on the entry taper.
5
The chips break into segments: individual pieces at the top of the hole, with progressively more farther down. They fall out below the workpiece.
6
Feed 1 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M6 x1 thread.

M6 through-hole machine tap – cobalt HSSE DIN 371

The manufacturer offers the M6 through-hole machine tap made of HSSE high-speed steel with 5% cobalt for professional applications in series production and maintenance. M6 is among the very most popular metric thread sizes used across all industries. The short shank according to DIN 371 provides compact dimensions and compatibility with standard tool holders. The 6H tolerance ensures the dimensional repeatability required in series production.

Advantages and applications of the M6 HSSE machine tap

  • Most popular M6 size used across all industries — from electronics through automotive to heavy machinery manufacturing
  • HSSE steel with 5% cobalt guarantees a hardness of 65-67 HRC and thermal resistance up to 650°C, extending cutting edge life under intensive use
  • Short shank in accordance with DIN 371 compatible with ER16 and ER20 collet chucks, collets, and tapping chucks with axial compensation
  • The 6H tolerance to DIN 371 ensures thread precision and full interchangeability with standard-class fasteners
  • Material versatility covering structural steels up to 800 MPa, alloy steels, austenitic stainless steels, cast iron, and aluminum
  • Metric pitch of 1 mm in accordance with DIN 13 for M6 coarse threads, with a recommended tap drill diameter of 5 mm

The M6 through-hole machine tap is used in series production across all industries, on assembly lines, and in maintenance departments for thread repairs and restoration. Form B with straight flutes ensures effective chip evacuation. The tool requires cooling with an oil emulsion at a minimum concentration of 6-8%.

Frequently asked questions

The M6 HSSE tap performs well in structural steels up to 800 MPa, alloy steels, austenitic stainless steels 304/316, gray and ductile cast iron, aluminum, and brass.

The recommended tap drill diameter for the M6 coarse thread is 5 mm. Accurate hole preparation ensures a full thread profile and minimizes the load on the tap.

With proper cooling, the M6 HSSE tap cuts 400-600 threads in structural steel and 200-300 threads in stainless steel. Dry operation reduces tool life by 30-40%.
