Ø30 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT3

Product description and key benefits

The Ø30 mm twist drill with an MT3 Morse taper is designed for drilling holes for bolted connections in steel structures — pipeline flanges, truss joints, and beam end plates. The MT3 taper with a diameter of 23.825 mm provides sufficient contact area to transmit the torque generated when drilling holes larger than 23 mm. The Ø30 Morse taper drill seats in the spindles of shop-grade pillar and box-column drilling machines rated at 1.5 kW or more.

Key benefits of the Ø30 mm metal drill bit

  • Direct mounting in an MT3 spindle — eliminates the drill chuck as a source of runout and slippage
  • Flute length 175 mm — drilling through holes in workpieces up to 160 mm thick in a single pass
  • DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — full interchangeability
  • Type N right-hand helical flutes — a compromise between web rigidity and flute capacity
  • h8 diameter fit — preliminary holes for reaming to H7 without additional boring
  • Extended tool life with emulsion cooling — coolant increases cutting edge life by up to a factor of 2.5 compared with dry drilling

The Ø30 mm Morse taper drill bit is used to manufacture infrastructure components — columns, supports, brackets, and load-bearing frames. In steel construction, hole diameters of 23–31 mm correspond to M22–M30 bolts. An H12 tolerance of Ø30.000–Ø30.210 mm is sufficient for through holes.

Machine tool requirements

The Ø30 mm drill requires a drilling machine with at least 1.5 kW of power and a rigid pillar or box-column construction. Bench drilling machines do not provide sufficient rigidity — resulting in runout, vibration, and accelerated cutting edge wear.

Material compatibility of the Ø30 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø30 mm drill bit

An HSSE drill bit contains 5% cobalt, which increases heat resistance from 600°C to 650°C. The practical difference: HSSE performs much better in stainless and difficult-to-machine steels. When machining only carbon steels, the difference in tool life is minimal.

Use peck drilling: retract the drill every 1–1.5×D, clear chips from the flutes, and cool with a 6–8% emulsion. Reduce the feed by 30–50% from the nominal value.

Spot drilling is not necessary on flat surfaces in structural steels. Spotting with a 90° NC spotting drill is recommended when drilling on inclined surfaces, castings with machining allowance, and flame-cut surfaces.
