Ø58 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT5

Product description and key benefits

The Ø58 mm twist drill with an MT5 Morse taper is a solution for large holes in solid material — where hole saws cannot be used due to the depth or geometry of the component. The flute length of 235 mm allows drilling holes in plates up to 215 mm thick. The Ø58 Morse taper drill requires emulsion cooling at a minimum flow rate of 6 l/min.

Key benefits of the Ø58 mm metal drill bit

  • MT5 taper — direct mounting — eliminates the drill chuck as a source of radial runout and tool slippage
  • HSS cutting edge, 63–65 HRC — hardness that ensures stable cutting of steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm² throughout the interval between sharpenings
  • Right-hand helical flutes — effective chip evacuation from the cutting zone — essential when drilling holes deeper than 2×D
  • Compact 422 mm design — shorter tool overhang provides greater rigidity and less vibration
  • Repeated reconditioning — the HSS cutting edge can be resharpened 8–12 times while retaining its geometry — at l2 = 235 mm, the resharpening allowance is approximately 29 mm
  • Sleeve compatibility — use on drilling machines with MT4 to MT6 spindles using reduction sleeves

The Ø58 Morse taper drill is used in heavy machinery manufacturing plants, ship repair yards, and industrial valve and fitting factories. Typical applications include holes for mechanical anchors in foundation plates, holes in gearbox bearing end shields, and bores for guide bushings. Hole tolerance class H12 (Ø58.000–Ø58.300 mm); H7 and tighter fits are achieved by boring.

REDUCTION SLEEVES COMPATIBLE WITH THE Ø58 MM DRILL BIT:

✓ MT5 → MT6 — for a spindle with an MT6 socket
✓ MT5 → MT4 — not recommended (socket capacity below the operating load)
✓ MT5 drill drift — for removing the drill bit from the spindle

Minimum machine power for diameters of 50+ mm

The Ø58 mm drill requires a machine with a power rating above 4 kW and an MT5 or larger spindle. Torque when drilling S355 steel reaches 116 Nm — pillar drilling machines rated below 3 kW will not provide stable cutting conditions.

Material compatibility of the Ø58 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 50%, pilot drilling required)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (increased Vc, emulsion cooling)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø58 mm drill bit

Yes — it is required. A Ø20–25 mm pilot hole eliminates cutting by the chisel edge, which at a diameter of 58 mm generates 60–70% of the total axial force and severe vibration.

1) Drill a Ø20–25 mm pilot hole. 2) Check runout in the spindle (maximum 0.03 mm). 3) Clamp the workpiece rigidly. 4) Use power feed — manual feed causes uneven pressure and resonance.

Yes — gray cast iron (GG20–GG30) and ductile cast iron (GGG40) are well suited to HSS drills. Short, brittle chips are easier to evacuate from the flutes than steel chips. Dry drilling with a compressed air blast is possible.
