Ø26.5 mm HSSE twist drill – MT3 Morse taper

Product description and key benefits

The Ø26.5 mm NWKc twist drill with an MT3 taper is designed for use on shop-grade pillar and box-column drilling machines. At this diameter, the volume of chips generated per centimeter of depth requires an efficient evacuation system — type N helical flutes handle this task with proper emulsion cooling. With a flute length of 165 mm, the Ø26.5 Morse taper drill is sufficient for drilling in flanges, plates, and thick-walled sections.

Key benefits of the Ø26.5 mm metal drill bit

  • 5% cobalt in the HSS matrix — raises the tempering temperature to 650°C — 50°C higher than standard HSS
  • Direct mounting in an MT3 spindle — eliminates the chuck as a source of runout — particularly important when drilling stainless steels, where runout reduces surface quality
  • Drilling austenitic steels — the HSSE cutting edge handles work hardening in 304/316/321 steels
  • h8 diameter tolerance — repeatable hole size even in difficult-to-machine materials
  • Conforms to DIN 345 — dimensions identical to HSS — a replacement for use in existing machining cells
  • Repeated resharpening — HSSE steel retains its properties after the cutting edge is reground on a tool grinder

The Ø26.5 mm Morse taper drill is selected for holes for pins, bearing bushings, and flanged connections in machinery manufacturing. It is suitable for machining foundation plates and bearing end shields. H12 tolerance holes (Ø26.500–Ø26.710 mm); tighter fits are achieved by reaming or boring.

Coolant selection for drilling diameters of 23–31 mm

At a diameter of 26.5 mm, the volume of chips removed is considerable — the helical flutes must evacuate a large amount of material. Use an emulsion at a concentration of 6–8% with a flow rate of at least 5 l/min. Without pressurized coolant, limit the depth of each pass to 53 mm.

Material compatibility of the Ø26.5 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 30%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø26.5 mm drill bit

Spot drilling is not necessary on flat surfaces in structural steels. Spotting with a 90° NC spotting drill is recommended when drilling on inclined surfaces, castings with machining allowance, and flame-cut surfaces.

The HSS drill can handle stainless steel with Vc reduced by 40% and ample coolant. For regular INOX machining, an HSSE (cobalt) drill of the same diameter is recommended.

A pillar or box-column drill press with an MT3 spindle and a power rating of at least 1.5 kW. For diameters above 25 mm, power feed is recommended — manual feed will not provide uniform pressure.
