Ø30.5 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT3

Product description and key benefits

The Ø30.5 mm twist drill with an MT3 taper becomes the only practical choice for stationary drilling machines in the 23–31 mm diameter range. A drill chuck cannot transmit the torque in this diameter range — the risk of slippage and reduced hole quality is too high. The design of the Ø30.5 Morse taper drill with an MT3 taper eliminates these problems.

Key benefits of the Ø30.5 mm metal drill bit

  • Secure MT3 taper mounting — the self-holding taper conforming to DIN 345 transmits cutting torque without intermediate components — no drill chuck is required
  • HSS steel resistant to temperatures up to 600°C — the cutting edge retains its working hardness at the cutting speeds recommended for structural steels and cast iron
  • Flute length 180 mm — enables drilling through holes in components up to 170 mm thick without extensions
  • Self-centering 118° geometry — eliminates spot drilling on flat surfaces — saves time in batch production
  • Diameter tolerance class h8 — the predrilled hole is ready for reaming to H7 without an additional boring bar pass
  • Full interchangeability according to DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — the drill can be replaced without adjusting the machine

The Ø30.5 mm Morse taper drill bit is used to manufacture infrastructure components — columns, supports, brackets, and load-bearing frames. In steel construction, hole diameters of 23–31 mm correspond to M22–M30 bolts. An H12 tolerance of Ø30.500–Ø30.750 mm is sufficient for through holes.

Machine tool requirements

The Ø30.5 mm drill requires a drilling machine with at least 1.5 kW of power and a rigid pillar or box-column construction. Bench drilling machines do not provide sufficient rigidity — resulting in runout, vibration, and accelerated cutting edge wear.

Material compatibility of the Ø30.5 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø30.5 mm drill bit

A pillar or box-column drill press with an MT3 spindle and a power rating of at least 1.5 kW. For diameters above 25 mm, power feed is recommended — manual feed will not provide uniform pressure.

An HSSE drill bit contains 5% cobalt, which increases heat resistance from 600°C to 650°C. The practical difference: HSSE performs much better in stainless and difficult-to-machine steels. When machining only carbon steels, the difference in tool life is minimal.

Use peck drilling: retract the drill every 1–1.5×D, clear chips from the flutes, and cool with a 6–8% emulsion. Reduce the feed by 30–50% from the nominal value.
