How the type B through-hole chamfer pushes chips down the hole

Chips exit at the bottom instead of returning through the thread

The form B chamfer for through holes has a chip breaker at the tip of the tap – an angled cut in the cutting edges. The chip breaker directs the chip down the hole, ahead of the tap tip. The chip curls into a coil, breaks into short pieces and exits the hole on the other side of the workpiece. The threads already cut remain clean because the chip does not pass through them on its way up. The M24x1 tap has a reduced shank according to DIN 374: diameter 18 mm, square size 14.5 mm.

1
Straight flute – chips do not enter it; the flute carries lubricant to the cutting edges.
2
The chip breaker at the tip of the tap directs chips down the hole.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
B chamfer: 3.5–5.5 incomplete threads on the entry taper.
5
The chips break into segments: individual pieces at the top of the hole, with progressively more farther down. They fall out below the workpiece.
6
Feed 1 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M24x1 thread.

M24x1 metric fine thread machine tap – HSSE for precise adjustment

The M24x1 metric fine thread machine tap is designed for precision tapping of holes in components requiring extremely accurate adjustment. HSSE high-speed steel construction with 5% cobalt guarantees a hardness of 65-67 HRC and optimum tool life when machining materials with a tensile strength up to 800 MPa. The M24x1 metric fine thread with a very small pitch is used in precision mechanisms, industrial optics, and measuring equipment requiring fine adjustment of axial position to fractions of a millimeter.

Key features of the M24x1 metric fine thread machine tap

  • Fine thread with a 1 mm pitch provides three times the adjustment precision of the M24x3 coarse thread, enabling fine adjustment of axial position
  • Increased load-bearing area of the thread of the metric fine thread translates into more uniform load distribution and higher tensile strength
  • HSSE steel with 5% cobalt guarantees a hardness of 65-67 HRC and thermal resistance up to 650°C required when machining alloy and stainless steels
  • Tolerance 6H according to DIN 374 ensures metric fine thread accuracy and full interchangeability with fasteners
  • Resistance to self-loosening thanks to the small pitch and large helix angle, eliminating the need for additional locking measures
  • Recommended tap drill diameter 23 mm for the M24x1 metric fine thread ensures optimal thread engagement

The M24x1 metric fine thread machine tap is used in industrial optics, precision mechanisms, measuring equipment, and wherever fine adjustment and maximum joint stability are required. A thread with such a small pitch is preferred for industrial lenses and precision instruments. Cooling with an emulsion containing EP additives at a concentration of 8-10% is recommended.

Frequently asked questions

The M24x1 metric fine thread provides three times the adjustment precision, higher tensile strength, better resistance to self-loosening, and the ability to make fine positional adjustments.

The recommended tap drill diameter for the M24x1 metric fine thread is 23 mm. Hole accuracy is particularly important for threads with such a small pitch.

The M24x1 thread is used in industrial optics, precision mechanisms, measuring equipment, and wherever fine positional adjustment to fractions of a millimeter is required.
