Prepare the rod (diameter 84.5-84.6 mm) with a carefully machined 45° chamfer. Due to the extreme dimensions, a mechanical drive is absolutely essential – a lathe or a specialized threading machine. Advance the die in the following cycle: two turns forward, one reverse movement of half a turn. Use the most rigid clamping possible to eliminate any vibration.
For an extremely large diameter, use intensive lubrication with threading oils or a cooling and lubricating emulsion. Apply generously before starting and every 2-3 turns. Due to the very high cutting forces at a diameter of 85 mm, consider an automatic lubrication system on the machine to ensure a continuous supply of lubricant.
At extreme dimensions, problems are particularly dangerous for the operator and equipment. Stop the mechanical drive immediately at the slightest increase in resistance, and withdraw the die in reverse mode. Check the rod diameter very carefully (tolerances are critical), and clean the flutes completely. Resume with maximum caution and more frequent reversing (every 1.5 turns), under the supervision of an experienced operator.
