ATM-Wiertol C is an oil for tapping and drilling all types of steel, especially difficult-to-machine steels — a replacement for the oil widely used in workshops Terebor with equivalent applications. This non-emulsifying ISO VG 22 cutting oil in a 0.5 l package is suitable for toolroom and maintenance use.
Non-emulsifying ISO VG 22 oil — composition and performance
Mineral base with lubricity additives
The product is based on highly refined mineral oils supplemented with lubricity, anti-mist and antifoam additives. Lubricating film strength is confirmed by a minimum weld load of 4800 N in the four-ball test — a measure of the film's resistance to seizure. Anti-mist additives reduce oil mist generation and actual oil consumption.
A kinematic viscosity of 19.8–24.2 mm²/s at 40°C combines rapid chip evacuation and heat removal with effective lubrication. This is particularly important in tapping: the tap contacts the material around the entire thread circumference, so lubrication rather than cooling determines tool life.
Oil for drilling and tapping steel — application range
Machining operations and materials
Tapping and drilling oil is used when machining high-alloy steels at medium cutting speeds in the following operations:
- tapping — through and blind holes, hand and machine taps, tapping machines
- drilling — especially deep holes where chip evacuation is difficult
- reaming — hole finishing with reamers
- form grinding
- gear hobbing
- rolling and gear shaving
Tapping machine oil in practice — speed selection and lubrication
Cutting speed and blind holes
When tapping difficult-to-machine steels, reduce the cutting speed: for taps HSSE (HSS-Co5, cobalt high-speed steel), use 5–15 m/min. Calculating spindle speed for a tap M10 at Vc = 6 m/min:
n = (1000 × Vc) / (π × d) = (1000 × 6) / (3.14 × 10) ≈ 191 rpm
Apply oil to the cutting portion of the tap and into the hole — before starting work and each time the tool is withdrawn. In blind holes, reduce the speed by an additional 20–30% and remove chips from the bottom of the hole — otherwise, the tap may break.
Non-emulsifying oil — use undiluted
ATM-Wiertol C is NOT suitable for preparing oil-in-water emulsions or topping up water-based coolant systems. Use only undiluted — apply by spray, brush, or oil can. When machining indoors, provide ventilation at the workstation — the maximum permissible concentration (NDS) of oil mist is 5 mg/m³ (inhalable fraction).
Storage and disposal of cutting oil
Storage, shelf life, waste
Store the oil in a tightly sealed container at 5–25°C — a 10°C increase in storage temperature doubles the oxidation rate of the base oil. The shelf life is 2 years. Used oil is hazardous waste (code 13 02 05*), to be transferred to an authorized waste collector and recorded in the BDO waste register.
Like the original Terebor, tapping and drilling oil ATM-Wiertol C is used exclusively undiluted — it does not form an emulsion with water, and its lubricating film retains full load-carrying capacity even during interrupted cutting. Its medium-speed operating range and ISO VG 22 viscosity grade make it a practical choice for drill presses and CNC machine tools.
Tapping grease or oil — frequently asked questions
FAQ
Yes, in terms of application: ATM-Wiertol C is a substitute for Terebor oil with the same intended use — tapping and drilling steels, especially difficult-to-machine grades. This does not imply an identical formulation. It is applied in the same way — undiluted, directly to the machining zone.
An emulsion (concentrate + water) provides better cooling at high speeds, while undiluted oil produces a stronger lubricating film, which is critical for tapping. Wiertol C is a non-emulsifying oil — it does not form an emulsion with water and must not be diluted or added to water-based coolant systems.
Paste or grease adheres to the tool at low speeds and when cutting individual threads by hand. Oil penetrates the hole more effectively, removes heat, and flushes out chips, making it suitable for machine operations and batches of holes. Spray is an oil format for quick, localized application.
Yes — the oil is used with hand taps, machine taps, and tapping machines. For stainless and acid-resistant steels, reduce the cutting speed (5–15 m/min for HSSE) and reapply lubricant each time the tool is withdrawn to prevent heating and material adhesion.
In a tightly sealed steel or polyethylene container at 5–25°C, away from moisture and sunlight — for up to 2 years from the date of manufacture. Used oil is hazardous waste (code 13 02 05*): transfer it to an authorized waste collector and record it in the BDO waste register.
