Die M21x1.5 HSS DIN 22 568 – a metric fine threading tool for vibration-resistant joints
The M21x1.5 die is a professional round tool made of high-speed steel (HSS) with a hardness of 64 HRC, intended for cutting external metric fine threads with a diameter of 21 mm and a pitch of 1.5 mm. At this diameter, the fine thread provides increased vibration resistance and higher fatigue strength compared with the standard M21x2.5. Construction compliant with DIN 22 568 and a tolerance class of 6g guarantee proper mating with 6H nuts in automotive and machinery industry applications, and wherever joints resistant to dynamic loads are required. A diameter of 21 mm is a popular size in the machinery industry, making this tool a practical addition to machine shops.
Why choose the M21x1.5 metric fine thread die
- Fine thread with a 1.5 mm pitch – a pitch finer than standard increases the load-bearing area and significantly improves resistance to vibrational loads in dynamic applications
- 21 mm diameter for industrial applications – a size used in the machinery and automotive industries, and in machines requiring reliable joints resistant to vibration
- High-speed steel HSS 64 HRC – provides long tool life when cutting metric fine threads in structural steels up to 800 MPa, aluminum, and brass
- 6g tolerance according to ISO – standard accuracy grade with controlled clearance allows nuts to be installed freely without binding in typical applications
- Solid round construction – the non-segmented construction eliminates dimensional errors and ensures repeatability in series production of components with metric fine threads
The M21x1.5 die is a tool selected by machine shops, maintenance departments, and manufacturing plants specializing in components subject to dynamic loads and vibration. It is particularly recommended for cutting threads on rods, pins, and shafts in the machinery and automotive industries. Use with threading lubricants is recommended to achieve a smooth surface and extend cutting edge life during intensive use.
Frequently asked questions
Prepare a rod (diameter 20.6-20.65 mm) with the end chamfered at 45°. Clamp the workpiece securely and keep the die strictly perpendicular, making two full turns forward followed by half a turn backward to remove chips. With a fine pitch of 1.5 mm, lubricate every 3 turns and regularly check perpendicularity to ensure thread profile quality.
For structural steels, use threading oils or standard machine oil applied before starting and replenished every few turns. Kerosene with added oil works well for aluminum, while machine oil is suitable for brass. A metric fine thread requires somewhat more intensive lubrication: apply lubricant every 3 turns instead of every 4 to keep the process running smoothly.
Causes include reversing too infrequently, insufficient lubrication, or an oversized rod. Stop the process immediately and unscrew the die completely by turning it in the opposite direction. Clean the flutes with a brush or compressed air and check the rod diameter with a micrometer. Resume with ample lubrication and more frequent reversing: for a metric fine thread, every 1.5 turn instead of every 2.
