Chamfer the end of the rod (diameter 33.5-33.6 mm) at approximately 45° and clamp it securely in a vise that prevents vibration. Position the die perpendicular to the axis and follow this cycle: two full turns in the cutting direction, then reverse half a turn to remove chips. Check perpendicularity regularly and use a suitable die stock for a diameter of 34 mm.
For structural steel, use threading oils or standard machine oil applied generously before starting and every 3-4 turns during operation. For aluminum, use kerosene with added oil; for brass, machine oil is sufficient. Lubrication reduces resistance by approximately 40 percent and extends tool life at a diameter of 34 mm.
Jamming often results from infrequent reversing or a lack of lubricant. Stop the process immediately, unscrew the die completely, and clean the flutes with a brass brush or compressed air. Check the rod diameter with a micrometer: tolerances are important at a diameter of 34 mm. Resume with more generous lubrication and more frequent reversing: every 1.5-2 turns instead of every 2-3.
