Prepare a rod (diameter 5.4-5.45 mm) with a carefully formed chamfer. Clamp the workpiece very securely, preferably under a magnifier for visual monitoring. Position the die perfectly square and make one full turn forward, then half a turn backward. With miniature dimensions and a fine pitch, avoid any excessive pressure – the cutting edges are very delicate.
Use precision machine oils in minimal quantities – excess oil hinders visual monitoring at miniature dimensions. Apply a drop of oil before starting and replenish it every few turns. For aluminum, use kerosene with added oil; for steel, use a light threading oil for precision mechanics.
Miniature cutting edges are extremely delicate with a fine pitch. At the slightest increase in resistance, stop immediately and unscrew the die very carefully. Check under a magnifier that the rod diameter is accurate (a deviation of 0.05 mm can be critical at a small diameter). Clean the flutes with a soft brush and resume with more frequent backing off – every 0.75-1 turns for miniature metric fine threads.
