M78x2 HSS DIN 22 568 die – a tool for large-diameter threads with a standard pitch
The professional M78x2 round die, made of high-speed steel (HSS) with a hardness of 64 HRC, provides precise cutting of external metric threads with a very large diameter of 78 mm and a standard pitch of 2 mm. This tool combines extreme dimensions with a conventional pitch, making it a versatile solution for workshops servicing the largest industrial structures, power generation machinery, and equipment with dimensions exceeding typical standards. Compliance with DIN 22 568 and a tolerance of 6g guarantee proper mating with 6H nuts in heavy industry applications. The diameter of 78 mm places the tool in the category of large components used in the power generation and shipbuilding industries.
Key advantages of the M78x2 HSS die
- Diameter of 78 mm for large structures – a size frequently found on main turbine shafts, rods of the largest hydraulic cylinders, and foundation rods in heavy industry
- Conventional pitch of 2 mm – a versatile pitch providing an optimal balance between mechanical strength and ease of thread cutting at very large diameters
- HSS steel hardness of 64 HRC – provides long tool life and wear resistance during prolonged operation at extremely large diameters in steels up to 800 MPa
- 6g/6H fit – standard tolerance class with normal clearance allows repeated assembly and disassembly of very large threaded connections
- Solid round design – the solid one-piece construction provides the maximum rigidity absolutely essential for threading extremely large diameters
The M78x2 die is a tool for the most specialized industrial workshops servicing power generation, marine, and mining machinery, as well as steel structures of extreme dimensions. It is particularly suitable for cutting threads on drive shafts, rods of large actuators, and structural foundation rods. Due to the dimensions, a mechanical drive, holders with the highest rigidity, and intensive lubrication with products intended for heavy-duty operations are recommended.
Frequently asked questions
Prepare the rod (diameter 77.5-77.6 mm) with a 45° chamfer and clamp it as securely as possible. Due to the very large diameter, a mechanical drive is recommended, or at least two-person operation with a die stock with handles at least 600 mm long. Use the following cycle: two full turns forward, half a turn back. Check perpendicular alignment regularly.
Use threading oils or cooling and lubricating emulsions, applied very generously before starting and every 2-3 turns during operation. A diameter of 78 mm generates extreme cutting forces – intensive lubrication is essential for reducing resistance and temperature and extending tool life.
Binding at a diameter of 78 mm is a very serious problem. Stop the process (or mechanical drive) immediately and withdraw the die completely with maximum caution. Clean the flutes very thoroughly and check the rod diameter carefully with a micrometer. Resume only with generous fresh lubrication and more frequent reversing – every 1.5 turns instead of every 2.
