Die M70x2 left-hand HSS DIN 22 568 – left-hand thread for large structures
The M70x2 left-hand die is a specialized round tool made of high-speed steel (HSS) with a hardness of 64 HRC, combining a large diameter of 70 mm with a left-hand thread with a standard pitch of 2 mm. A left-hand thread is cut in the opposite direction to a standard thread, preventing self-unscrewing in large rotating machines where components rotate clockwise during operation. Compliance with DIN 22 568 and a tolerance of 6g ensure proper mating with left-hand 6H nuts. This tool is intended for specialist workshops servicing the heavy machinery industry, rotating equipment, and structures requiring left-hand threads at very large dimensions.
Key advantages of the M70x2 left-hand die
- Left-hand thread at a diameter of 70 mm – the left-hand direction prevents unscrewing in large rotating machines, gearboxes, and equipment where a standard right-hand thread could loosen during operation
- Diameter of 70 mm for large machinery – a size found in the largest industrial gearboxes, large grinding machines, and machines requiring a left-hand thread at very large dimensions
- Standard pitch of 2 mm – a conventional pitch that provides adequate mechanical strength while allowing thread cutting despite the large diameter and left-hand direction
- HSS steel hardness of 64 HRC – provides long service life when cutting large-diameter left-hand threads in structural steels up to 800 MPa
- Solid round construction – one-piece construction provides the maximum rigidity required for large-diameter left-hand threading
The M70x2 left-hand die is a solution for specialist workshops servicing large rotating machines, large industrial gearboxes, large grinding machines, and equipment where the direction of rotation requires a left-hand thread at very large dimensions. Due to these characteristics (left-hand + large diameter), threading requires a highly skilled operator, rigid die stocks with long handles of at least 600 mm, and preferably a mechanical drive for safety.
Frequently asked questions
Prepare the rod (diameter 69.5-69.6 mm) with a 45° chamfer. Clamp it as securely as possible to eliminate all vibration. Turn the die counterclockwise (to the left), making two forward turns, then back off half a turn clockwise. Due to the large diameter, a mechanical drive or two-person operation with handles at least 600 mm long is recommended.
Use threading oils or cooling and lubricating emulsions applied very generously before starting and every 2-3 turns. Large-diameter left-hand threading requires intensive lubrication – at a diameter of 70 mm, high cutting forces are generated, requiring a continuous supply of lubricant to reduce resistance and temperature.
Remember that backing off a left-hand thread requires clockwise rotation. Immediately turn clockwise (to the right) to withdraw the die safely. Problems at large diameters are particularly dangerous – clean the flutes very thoroughly and check the rod diameter. Resume with generous fresh lubrication and more frequent backing off (every 1.5 turn) under the supervision of an experienced operator.
