Die M16x1.25 left-hand HSS DIN 22 568 – small-diameter left-hand metric fine thread
The M16x1.25 left-hand die is a specialized round tool made of high-speed steel (HSS) with a hardness of 64 HRC, combining a small diameter of 16 mm with a left-hand metric fine thread with a pitch of 1.25 mm. A left-hand thread is cut in the direction opposite to the standard direction, preventing self-loosening in small and medium-sized rotating equipment, while the fine pitch further increases vibration resistance. Compliance with DIN 22 568 and the 6g tolerance ensure a proper fit with 6H left-hand nuts. This tool is used in power tools, small rotating equipment, and precision mechanisms where components rotate clockwise during operation and require maximum protection against loosening.
Main advantages of the M16x1.25 left-hand fine-thread die
- Left-hand metric fine thread with a pitch of 1.25 mm – combining a left-hand direction with a fine pitch provides dual protection: mechanical resistance to unscrewing and design-based resistance to vibration-induced loosening at small diameters
- Diameter of 16 mm for small rotating equipment – a size frequently used in power tools, rotating equipment, and precision mechanisms requiring a left-hand thread with additional properties
- High-speed steel HSS 64 HRC – provides long service life when cutting left-hand metric fine threads in structural steels up to 800 MPa, aluminum, and brass
- 6g tolerance according to ISO – a standard accuracy grade with controlled clearance ensures proper fit with left-hand nuts in small precision mechanisms
- Solid round construction – non-segmented construction eliminates dimensional errors and provides stability when cutting small-diameter left-hand metric fine threads
The M16x1.25 left-hand die is a tool for machine shops specializing in power tools, small rotating equipment, and precision mechanisms requiring a left-hand thread with the additional properties of a fine thread. It is particularly useful for cutting threads on small shafts, pins, and studs where a standard right-hand thread could loosen and vibration resistance is also required. Due to the combination (left-hand + fine thread + small diameter), the process requires extra attention from the operator.
Frequently asked questions
Prepare a rod (diameter 15.7-15.75 mm) with a chamfer. Clamp it securely and align the die perpendicular to the rod axis. Rotate counterclockwise (to the left), making two turns forward, then back off clockwise by half a turn. When cutting a small-diameter left-hand fine thread, check perpendicularity and lubricate every 2-3 turns to ensure quality.
For structural steels, use threading oils applied before starting and replenished every 3 turns. A small-diameter left-hand fine thread requires intensive lubrication – a pitch of 1.25 mm generates a large number of chips. The left-hand direction does not change lubrication requirements; these are determined by pitch and diameter.
Remember that backing off a left-hand thread requires clockwise rotation. Immediately rotate clockwise (to the right) to gently withdraw the die. Clean the flutes with a brush or compressed air and check the rod diameter with a micrometer. Resume with generous lubrication and more frequent backing off – for a small-diameter left-hand fine thread, every 1.5 turn instead of every 2.
