Where chips remain in a straight-flute tap
The flute holds the chips until the tap is reversed out
The straight flute runs parallel to the tap axis. There is no helix to carry chips upward. The chamfer cutting edges are not ground at an angle, so they do not push chips downward. Short chips break into fragments and remain in the flute, next to the cutting edges that produced them. They leave the hole only when the tap is backed out. The M20x1.5 tap has a reduced shank to DIN 374: diameter 16 mm, square size 12 mm.
M20x1.5 INOX machine tap – tool for precision tapping
The M20x1.5 INOX machine tap is a professional tool for cutting internal M20 threads with a fine pitch of 1.5 mm in stainless and structural steels. Its HSSE high-speed steel construction with 5% cobalt provides a hardness of 66 HRC and high resistance to cutting zone temperatures up to 650°C. Form C with straight flutes allows tapping of both through holes and blind holes without changing tools. The 6H tolerance in accordance with DIN 374 guarantees dimensional repeatability and full interchangeability with threads cut using other tools of this class. The Narex M20x1.5 HSSE machine tap is intended for toolrooms and CNC machining center operators.
Key advantages of the Narex M20x1.5 INOX tap
- Durability and heat resistance thanks to HSSE steel with 5% cobalt, which retains its cutting properties at temperatures up to 650°C in the contact zone with the workpiece material
- Precision to tolerance class 6H according to DIN 374 ensures the dimensional accuracy required in series production of mechanical components and threaded connections
- Compliance with DIN 374 for metric fine threads confirms standardized dimensions and full compatibility with European toolholding systems
- Material versatility covering austenitic stainless steels 304 and 316, structural steels up to 800 MPa, aluminum, and GGG40 ductile cast iron
- Compatibility with ER32 holders and tapping chucks with axial compensation for synchronous tapping on CNC and conventional machines
- Suitable for through holes and blind holes thanks to form C with straight flutes, which ensures proper chip evacuation in both hole types
The M20x1.5 general-purpose machine tap is used in automotive series production and on assembly lines requiring high repeatability. The Narex M20x1.5 machine tap for through holes and blind holes guarantees European quality. The tap drill diameter for the M20x1.5 thread is 18.5 mm.

Frequently asked questions
The M20x1.5 HSSE tap with form C and straight flutes is versatile – it is suitable for both through and blind holes. The design ensures proper chip evacuation in both types of holes.
The M20x1.5 HSSE tap cuts internal threads to tolerance class 6H. The 6H designation defines the permissible deviations of the thread pitch and minor diameters – the digit 6 indicates the width of the tolerance zone (medium), while the letter H indicates the position of the zone at the zero line. The 6H tolerance ensures a proper fit with screws of tolerance class 6g.
When tapping stainless steels, an EP emulsion at a minimum concentration of 8% or tapping oil is recommended for cooling. Cooling extends tool life by a factor of 2-3 and improves the thread surface finish.
