Where chips remain in a straight-flute tap
The flute holds the chips until the tap is reversed out
The straight flute runs parallel to the tap axis. There is no helix to carry chips upward. The chamfer cutting edges are not ground at an angle, so they do not push chips downward. Short chips break into fragments and remain in the flute, next to the cutting edges that produced them. They leave the hole only when the tap is backed out. The M20x2 tap has a reduced shank to DIN 374: diameter 16 mm, square size 12 mm.
M20x2 INOX machine tap – for stainless steel
The M20x2 INOX machine tap is designed for precision tapping of holes with a diameter of 20 mm and a fine pitch of 2 mm in stainless and structural steels. HSSE high-speed steel construction with 5% cobalt ensures a hardness of 66 HRC and long cutting edge life even when machining difficult-to-machine materials. Form C with straight flutes provides versatile use in through and blind holes. The 6H tolerance according to DIN 374 confirms high manufacturing quality and dimensional repeatability. The M20x2 HSSE machine tap is intended for maintenance departments and industrial service shops.
Key features of the M20x2 INOX tap
- Manufacturing precision to 6H tolerance ensures dimensional repeatability and full thread interchangeability in series production of mechanical and hydraulic components
- Compliance with DIN 374 for fine threads confirms quality and ensures standardized shank dimensions compatible with European holders
- Durability increased by the addition of 5% cobalt allows operation at temperatures up to 650°C without loss of cutting edge performance
- Compatibility with ER32 holders and tapping heads for CNC machining centers with synchronous tapping and automatic tool changing
- Designed for stainless steels austenitic grades 304 and 316 and ferritic grades, which require tools with increased heat and abrasion resistance
- M20x2 general-purpose machine tap with form C allows through and blind holes to be tapped with a single tool without the risk of jamming
The M20x2 machine tap for through and blind holes is suitable for maintenance departments restoring threads and repairing production machinery in industrial plants. It is also used in service and repair shops. The tap drill diameter for the M20x2 thread is 18 mm when cooling with an EP emulsion at a minimum concentration of 8%.

Frequently asked questions
With proper cooling and lubrication, the M20x2 HSSE tap cuts 400-600 threads in structural steel or 250-350 threads in stainless steel. Dry operation reduces tool life by 40-50%.
Yes, the M20x2 HSSE tap with 5% cobalt is designed for austenitic stainless steels 304 and 316. The addition of cobalt increases heat resistance in the cutting zone to 650°C.
An HSSE tap contains 5% cobalt, which increases hardness from 64 to 66 HRC and heat resistance to 650°C. HSSE is suitable for stainless steels, while HSS is suitable only for structural steels up to 800 MPa.
