Where chips remain in a straight-flute tap
The flute holds the chips until the tap is reversed out
The straight flute runs parallel to the tap axis. There is no helix to carry chips upward. The chamfer cutting edges are not ground at an angle, so they do not push chips downward. Short chips break into fragments and remain in the flute, next to the cutting edges that produced them. They leave the hole only when the tap is backed out. The M16x1.5 tap has a reduced shank to DIN 374: diameter 12 mm, square size 9 mm.
M16x1.5 INOX machine tap – tool for precision tapping
This model from the Fra HSSE series is designed to cut M16x1.5 metric fine threads in stainless and structural steels and features a pitch of 1.5 mm. The M16x1.5 INOX machine tap provides an optimum balance between connection load capacity and ease of assembly in applications requiring frequent disassembly. With 5% added cobalt, the tool retains a hardness of 66 HRC even at temperatures up to 650°C in the cutting zone. Form C with straight flutes provides versatile use. The M16x1.5 HSSE machine tap is intended for manufacturers of hydraulic and pneumatic components.
Key benefits of the M16x1.5 INOX Fra tap
- Compatibility with ER32 holders collets and synchronized tapping chucks for CNC machining centers with automatic tool change
- Material versatility covering austenitic stainless steels 304 and 316, structural steels up to 800 MPa and nonferrous metals such as aluminum and brass
- Durability increased by the addition of cobalt in HSSE steel allows 400-600 threads to be cut in structural steel with proper emulsion cooling
- Precision to tolerance class 6H for demanding fit tolerances in series production of mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic components
- Compliance with DIN 374 for fine threads ensures standardized shank dimensions and interchangeability with tools from European manufacturers
- M16x1.5 general-purpose machine tap with form C allows tapping of through holes and blind holes without changing the tool or parameters
The M16x1.5 machine tap for through and blind holes is used in automotive series production and on assembly lines requiring high repeatability. The Fra brand guarantees European manufacturing quality. The tap drill diameter for the M16x1.5 thread is 14.5 mm.

Frequently asked questions
The M16x1.5 HSSE tap is suitable for austenitic stainless steels 304 and 316, structural steels up to 800 MPa, ductile cast iron, and aluminum and brass alloys. It is not recommended for hardened steels above 45 HRC.
The nominal tap drill diameter for the M16x1.5 thread is 14.5 mm. The hole tolerance range should be 14.4–14.6 mm. A hole at the lower tolerance limit produces a fuller thread profile, while one at the upper limit reduces tapping torque.
The M16x1.5 tap works with ER25 holders and tapping chucks with axial compensation. Synchronized heads with automatic tool change capability are recommended for CNC machines.
