How the type B through-hole chamfer pushes chips down the hole

Chips exit at the bottom instead of returning through the thread

The form B chamfer for through holes has a chip breaker at the tip of the tap – an angled cut in the cutting edges. The chip breaker directs the chip down the hole, ahead of the tap tip. The chip curls into a coil, breaks into short pieces and exits the hole on the other side of the workpiece. The threads already cut remain clean because the chip does not pass through them on its way up. The M32x3 tap has a reduced shank according to DIN 374: diameter 25 mm, square size 20 mm.

M32x3 DIN 374 tap – diagram of chip movement and rotation direction during tapping
1
Straight flute – chips do not enter it; the flute carries lubricant to the cutting edges.
2
The chip breaker at the tip of the tap directs chips down the hole.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
B chamfer: 3.5–5.5 incomplete threads on the entry taper.
5
The chips break into segments: individual pieces at the top of the hole, with progressively more farther down. They fall out below the workpiece.
6
Feed 3 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M32x3 thread.

M32x3 fine-thread machine tap – economical HSS for structural applications

The M32x3 fine-thread machine tap is an economical HSS high-speed steel tool for cutting internal threads with a pitch of 3 mm in machinery and steel structures. Made of HSS steel with a hardness of 62-65 HRC, it provides good tool life when machining soft and medium-hard materials with a tensile strength of up to 800 MPa. The 3 mm pitch is intermediate between the M32x3.5 coarse thread and typical fine threads, offering a balance between assembly speed and strength.

Technical specifications of the M32x3 HSS machine tap

  • Economical HSS steel with a hardness of 62-65 HRC, offers good value for money when machining standard materials
  • Fine thread with a 3 mm pitch offers a balance between the assembly speed of a coarse thread and the strength of a fine thread
  • Designed for soft materials including structural steels up to 800 MPa, gray cast iron, and aluminum — not recommended for stainless steels
  • Tolerance 6H according to DIN 374 ensures precise thread production and full interchangeability with fasteners
  • Compatibility with ER40 holders and collets for clamping on CNC machining centers
  • Recommended tap drill diameter 29 mm for the M32x3 metric fine thread ensures optimal thread engagement

The M32x3 HSS machine tap is used in steel structures and machinery manufacturing where the highest cutting performance is not required and machining standard materials is sufficient. Form B with straight flutes directs chips forward. Cooling with an oil emulsion at a concentration of 5-8% is recommended.

Frequently asked questions

An HSS tap has a hardness of 62-65 HRC and is an economical solution for standard materials. HSSE with 5% cobalt reaches 65-67 HRC and is recommended for stainless and difficult-to-machine steels.

The recommended tap drill diameter for the M32x3 metric fine thread is 29 mm. Precise hole machining ensures full thread engagement.

HSS steel without added cobalt is not optimal for stainless steels due to its lower heat resistance. An HSSE tap with 5% cobalt is recommended for stainless steels.
