How the type B through-hole chamfer pushes chips down the hole

Chips exit at the bottom instead of returning through the thread

The form B chamfer for through holes has a chip breaker at the tip of the tap – an angled cut in the cutting edges. The chip breaker directs the chip down the hole, ahead of the tap tip. The chip curls into a coil, breaks into short pieces and exits the hole on the other side of the workpiece. The threads already cut remain clean because the chip does not pass through them on its way up. The M20x0.75 tap has a reduced shank according to DIN 374: diameter 16 mm, square size 12 mm.

M20x0.75 DIN 374 tap – diagram of chip movement and rotation direction during tapping
1
Straight flute – chips do not enter it; the flute carries lubricant to the cutting edges.
2
The chip breaker at the tip of the tap directs chips down the hole.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
B chamfer: 3.5–5.5 incomplete threads on the entry taper.
5
The chips break into segments: individual pieces at the top of the hole, with progressively more farther down. They fall out below the workpiece.
6
Feed 0.75 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M20x0.75 thread.

M20x0.75 machine tap for metric fine threads – HSSE for precision connections

The M20x0.75 machine tap for metric fine threads is a specialized tool for producing internal threads with a very fine pitch of 0.75 mm, providing maximum adjustment precision and exceptional resistance to self-loosening. HSSE high-speed steel construction with 5% cobalt ensures a hardness of 65-67 HRC and optimal durability when machining difficult-to-machine materials. The M20x0.75 metric fine thread is used in applications requiring extremely precise axial position adjustment, high tensile strength, and maximum resistance to loosening under vibration and dynamic loads.

Key advantages of the M20x0.75 metric fine thread machine tap

  • Fine thread with a 0.75 mm pitch provides maximum axial position adjustment precision — one screw revolution produces a travel of just 0.75 mm, enabling micro-adjustment
  • Increased load-bearing area of the thread of the metric fine thread results in more uniform load distribution and higher tensile strength than the M20x2.5 coarse thread
  • HSSE steel with 5% cobalt guarantees a hardness of 65-67 HRC and thermal resistance up to 650°C required when machining alloy and stainless steels
  • Tolerance 6H according to DIN 374 ensures precision in producing the metric fine thread and full interchangeability with standard-grade fasteners
  • Resistance to self-loosening thanks to the fine pitch and large helix angle, eliminating the need for additional locking devices
  • Recommended tap drill diameter 19.2 mm for the M20x0.75 metric fine thread ensures an optimal percentage of thread engagement and minimal tool load

The M20x0.75 machine tap for metric fine threads is used in the aerospace industry, industrial optics, and precision engineering, where micro-adjustment and maximum joint stability are required. Such a fine thread pitch is preferred in lens assemblies, strain gauge mechanisms, and precision measuring instruments. Cooling with an emulsion containing EP additives at a concentration of 8-10% is recommended.

Frequently asked questions

The M20x0.75 metric fine thread provides 3.3 times the adjustment precision of a coarse thread, higher tensile strength, better resistance to self-loosening, and less weakening of thin-walled components.

The recommended tap drill diameter for the M20x0.75 metric fine thread is 19.2 mm. Hole accuracy is particularly important for threads with such a small pitch.

The M20x0.75 thread is used in industrial optics, precision mechanisms, measuring instruments, and wherever position micro-adjustment with accuracy to fractions of a millimeter is required.
