Ø10 mm HSSE twist drill – MT1 Morse taper

Product description and key benefits

The Ø10 mm NWKc twist drill is distinguished by its mounting method — the MT1 Morse taper eliminates the intermediate component between the tool and the spindle. This results in lower radial runout and improved repeatability of hole dimensions. The Ø10 Morse taper drill with a high-speed steel (HSS) cutting edge retains its working hardness up to 600°C, allowing drilling without the risk of tempering the cutting edge.

Key benefits of the Ø10 mm metal drill bit

  • 5% cobalt in the HSS matrix — raises the tempering temperature to 650°C — 50°C higher than standard HSS
  • Direct mounting in an MT1 spindle — eliminates the chuck as a source of runout — particularly important when drilling stainless steels, where runout reduces surface quality
  • Drilling austenitic steels — the HSSE cutting edge handles work hardening in 304/316/321 steels
  • h8 diameter tolerance — repeatable hole size even in difficult-to-machine materials
  • Conforms to DIN 345 — dimensions identical to HSS — a replacement for use in existing machining cells
  • Repeated resharpening — HSSE steel retains its properties after the cutting edge is reground on a tool grinder

The Ø10 Morse taper drill is suitable for series production of steel components, where repeatable hole dimensions determine assembly quality. With H12 tolerance at Ø10.000–Ø10.150 mm, holes require no additional machining for bolted connections. More precise fits are achieved with a finishing reamer.

Drill sharpening

Sharpen the Ø10 mm drill bit on a tool grinder, maintaining the 118° point angle and cutting edge symmetry. Asymmetric sharpening enlarges the hole diameter and loads the spindle unevenly. Each sharpening reduces the flute length by approximately 1–2 mm.

Material compatibility of the Ø10 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 30%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø10 mm drill bit

A cooling and lubricating emulsion at a concentration of 5–8% is recommended. For stainless steels, increase the concentration to 8–10%. Cast iron can be drilled dry with compressed air to remove chips.

The Ø10 mm NWKc drill bit with an MT1 taper mounts directly in the drill press spindle — the self-holding taper eliminates slipping under high cutting torque. A straight shank drill bit requires a drill chuck, which may not transmit the full torque during heavy use.

Yes — using an MT1→MT2 reduction sleeve. The sleeve ensures proper seating of the taper in the larger spindle socket. Use a correctly sized drill drift for removal.
