Ø43 mm HSSE twist drill – MT4 Morse taper

Product description and key benefits

The Ø43 mm NWKc metal drill bit with an MT4 Morse taper falls within the range where the volume of material removed per centimeter of depth requires particular attention to chip evacuation and cooling. The MT4 taper transmits the torque generated at diameters of 32–50 mm without the risk of slippage. The Ø43 Morse taper drill bit with a flute length of 210 mm enables through drilling in components with thicknesses encountered in heavy machinery manufacturing.

Key benefits of the Ø43 mm metal drill bit

  • HSSE steel with 5% cobalt — heat resistance up to 650°C allows drilling in 304/316 stainless steels without rapid dulling of the cutting edge
  • Morse taper MT4 — self-holding mounting in the spindle eliminates slippage at the high cutting torques generated in difficult-to-machine steels
  • Increased hot hardness — cobalt in the steel matrix increases resistance to tempering — essential at low Vc and the high cutting resistance of austenitic steels
  • DIN 345 — full interchangeability with HSS drills of the same size and compatibility with reduction sleeves
  • Flute length 210 mm — drilling through holes in components up to 195 mm thick
  • Machining INOX steel without coatings — HSSE geometry and composition allow drilling in acid-resistant steels without TiN/TiAlN coatings

The Ø43 Morse taper drill is chosen for heavy-duty hole machining in machine building, ship repair yards, and valve and fitting factories. Typical applications: holes in end plates, bearing end shields, and drive components. Hole tolerance class H12 (Ø43.000–Ø43.250 mm); tighter fits are achieved by boring.

Deep-hole drilling (over 3×D)

When drilling holes deeper than 129 mm (3ר43), periodically retract the drill every 1–1.5×D to remove chips. Use ample emulsion cooling (minimum concentration of 6–8%). Reduce the feed by 30–50% from nominal values.

Material compatibility of the Ø43 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 30%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø43 mm drill bit

Depth greater than 3×D (129 mm): reduce feed by 30–50%, retract every 1×D, and use a 6–8% emulsion at a minimum flow rate of 6 l/min. Peck drilling prevents chips from jamming in the flutes.

1) Clean the taper and spindle socket. 2) Check runout (maximum 0.03 mm). 3) Replace the drill if the taper is damaged or worn. 4) Do not stack reduction sleeves (e.g., MT4→MT3→MT5).

For diameters up to approximately 40 mm, drilling into solid material is possible after spot drilling with an NC 90° drill. Above 40 mm, a Ø20–25 mm pilot hole is recommended to reduce axial force by 40–50% and eliminate vibration from the chisel edge.
