Ø17.5 mm HSSE twist drill – MT2 Morse taper
Product description and key benefits
The Ø17.5 mm twist drill with an MT2 taper shank conforming to DIN 345 is used on pillar and box-column drilling machines in metalworking shops, toolrooms, and maintenance departments. The 17.5 mm diameter falls within the MT2 taper range, the most common size in shop drilling machines rated at 0.75–1.5 kW. The Ø17.5 Morse taper drill with right-hand helical flute geometry evacuates chips from the cutting zone even when drilling deep holes.
Key benefits of the Ø17.5 mm metal drill bit
- HSSE steel with 5% cobalt — heat resistance up to 650°C allows drilling in 304/316 stainless steels without rapid dulling of the cutting edge
- Morse taper MT2 — self-holding mounting in the spindle eliminates slippage at the high cutting torques generated in difficult-to-machine steels
- Increased hot hardness — cobalt in the steel matrix increases resistance to tempering — essential at low Vc and the high cutting resistance of austenitic steels
- DIN 345 — full interchangeability with HSS drills of the same size and compatibility with reduction sleeves
- Flute length 130 mm — drilling through holes in components up to 115 mm thick
- Machining INOX steel without coatings — HSSE geometry and composition allow drilling in acid-resistant steels without TiN/TiAlN coatings
The Ø17.5 Morse taper drill is suitable for drilling holes in hollow sections, medium-thickness sheet metal, and components used in machinery repairs. H12 tolerance (Ø17.500–Ø17.680 mm) is sufficient for assembly holes; if H7 tolerance is required, additional reaming is necessary.

Deep-hole drilling (over 3×D)
When drilling holes deeper than 52 mm (3ר17.5), periodically retract the drill every 1–1.5×D to remove chips. Use ample emulsion cooling (minimum concentration of 6–8%). Reduce the feed by 30–50% from nominal values.

Frequently asked questions about the Ø17.5 mm drill bit
Use cooling with a 5–8% emulsion, do not exceed the recommended cutting parameters, and resharpen the tool before it becomes completely dull. Clean taper and spindle socket surfaces reduce runout — the main cause of accelerated wear.
In S235/S355 structural steels, spot drilling is not necessary — the 118° angle provides self-centering. Spotting with a 90° NC spotting drill is recommended when drilling on uneven or inclined surfaces, where the drill may slip away from the marked point.
The HSS drill can be used for stainless steel with Vc reduced by 40% and ample cooling with a 8–10% emulsion. An HSSE (cobalt) drill of the same diameter is a more efficient option, retaining its hardness up to 650°C.
