Ø28.5 mm HSSE twist drill – MT3 Morse taper

Product description and key benefits

The Ø28.5 mm NWKc twist drill with an MT3 taper is designed for use on shop-grade pillar and box-column drilling machines. At this diameter, the volume of chips generated per centimeter of depth requires an efficient evacuation system — type N helical flutes handle this task with proper emulsion cooling. With a flute length of 175 mm, the Ø28.5 Morse taper drill is sufficient for drilling in flanges, plates, and thick-walled sections.

Key benefits of the Ø28.5 mm metal drill bit

  • Cobalt 5% — hardness up to 67 HRC — greater hardness than standard HSS (63–65 HRC) translates into longer service life between sharpenings
  • MT3 Morse taper to DIN 345 — secure, self-holding mounting regardless of load level
  • Cutting-edge stability in INOX steels — HSSE does not require as drastic a reduction in Vc as HSS when drilling acid-resistant steels
  • Flute length 175 mm — allows drilling through standard structural component thicknesses
  • Versatility — drilling structural steels, stainless steels, cast iron, and aluminum with one tool
  • 118° angle — self-centering in most materials without spot drilling

The Ø28.5 mm Morse taper drill bit is used to manufacture infrastructure components — columns, supports, brackets, and load-bearing frames. In steel construction, hole diameters of 23–31 mm correspond to M22–M30 bolts. An H12 tolerance of Ø28.500–Ø28.710 mm is sufficient for through holes.

Machine tool requirements

The Ø28.5 mm drill requires a drilling machine with at least 1.5 kW of power and a rigid pillar or box-column construction. Bench drilling machines do not provide sufficient rigidity — resulting in runout, vibration, and accelerated cutting edge wear.

Material compatibility of the Ø28.5 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 30%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø28.5 mm drill bit

Use peck drilling: retract the drill every 1–1.5×D, clear chips from the flutes, and cool with a 6–8% emulsion. Reduce the feed by 30–50% from the nominal value.

Spot drilling is not necessary on flat surfaces in structural steels. Spotting with a 90° NC spotting drill is recommended when drilling on inclined surfaces, castings with machining allowance, and flame-cut surfaces.

The HSS drill can handle stainless steel with Vc reduced by 40% and ample coolant. For regular INOX machining, an HSSE (cobalt) drill of the same diameter is recommended.
