Ø10.5 mm HSSE twist drill – MT1 Morse taper

Product description and key benefits

The Ø10.5 mm NWKc twist drill combines two features important in everyday shop work: secure taper mounting and the ability to be resharpened repeatedly. The MT1 taper provides direct contact with the spindle — without play or slippage. With a flute length of 87 mm, the Ø10.5 Morse taper drill allows machining of workpieces of standard thicknesses, while the 118° point angle eliminates the need for preliminary spot drilling on flat surfaces.

Key benefits of the Ø10.5 mm metal drill bit

  • HSSE steel with 5% cobalt — heat resistance up to 650°C allows drilling in 304/316 stainless steels without rapid dulling of the cutting edge
  • Morse taper MT1 — self-holding mounting in the spindle eliminates slippage at the high cutting torques generated in difficult-to-machine steels
  • Increased hot hardness — cobalt in the steel matrix increases resistance to tempering — essential at low Vc and the high cutting resistance of austenitic steels
  • DIN 345 — full interchangeability with HSS drills of the same size and compatibility with reduction sleeves
  • Flute length 87 mm — drilling through holes in components up to 72 mm thick
  • Machining INOX steel without coatings — HSSE geometry and composition allow drilling in acid-resistant steels without TiN/TiAlN coatings

The Ø10.5 Morse taper drill is used in maintenance departments for repairing and reconditioning machine components. Standard H12 hole tolerance (Ø10.500–Ø10.680 mm) is sufficient for most through holes; close fits are achieved by reaming.

Checking radial runout

Before drilling with the Ø10.5 mm drill, check radial runout in the spindle — the maximum permissible value is 0.02 mm. Excessive runout reduces hole quality and accelerates cutting edge wear. The taper and spindle socket must be clean and dry.

Material compatibility of the Ø10.5 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 30%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø10.5 mm drill bit

The Ø10.5 mm NWKc drill bit with an MT1 taper mounts directly in the drill press spindle — the self-holding taper eliminates slipping under high cutting torque. A straight shank drill bit requires a drill chuck, which may not transmit the full torque during heavy use.

Yes — using an MT1→MT2 reduction sleeve. The sleeve ensures proper seating of the taper in the larger spindle socket. Use a correctly sized drill drift for removal.

The maximum drilling depth is the flute length l2 = 87 mm minus the drill point length (approximately 3 mm). The effective usable depth is therefore approximately 84 mm.
