Ø22.5 mm HSSE twist drill – MT2 Morse taper

Product description and key benefits

The Ø22.5 mm NWKc twist drill with an MT2 taper is standard equipment for pillar drilling machines in metalworking shops and toolrooms. The 22.5 mm diameter falls within the range where the MT2 taper provides an optimal ratio of contact area to operating load. The Ø22.5 Morse taper drill with type N flute geometry balances efficient chip evacuation with drill web rigidity.

Key benefits of the Ø22.5 mm metal drill bit

  • Cobalt 5% — hardness up to 67 HRC — greater hardness than standard HSS (63–65 HRC) translates into longer service life between sharpenings
  • MT2 Morse taper to DIN 345 — secure, self-holding mounting regardless of load level
  • Cutting-edge stability in INOX steels — HSSE does not require as drastic a reduction in Vc as HSS when drilling acid-resistant steels
  • Flute length 155 mm — allows drilling through standard structural component thicknesses
  • Versatility — drilling structural steels, stainless steels, cast iron, and aluminum with one tool
  • 118° angle — self-centering in most materials without spot drilling

The Ø22.5 Morse taper drill is used in structural steel fabrication plants, toolrooms, and machinery service shops. Typical applications include mounting holes for bolts, pins, and bushings in steel flanges, plates, and sections. Hole tolerance class H12 (Ø22.500–Ø22.710 mm); H7 fits require reaming with a finishing reamer.

Coolant selection when drilling diameters of 22.5

At a diameter of 22.5 mm, the volume of chips removed increases significantly — the helical flutes must evacuate more material per centimeter of depth. Use an emulsion with a concentration of 6–8% at a minimum delivery rate of 3 l/min. Without pressurized cooling, limit the depth of each pass to 67 mm.

Material compatibility of the Ø22.5 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 30%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø22.5 mm drill bit

Use cooling with a 5–8% emulsion, do not exceed the recommended cutting parameters, and resharpen the tool before it becomes completely dull. Clean taper and spindle socket surfaces reduce runout — the main cause of accelerated wear.

In S235/S355 structural steels, spot drilling is not necessary — the 118° angle provides self-centering. Spotting with a 90° NC spotting drill is recommended when drilling on uneven or inclined surfaces, where the drill may slip away from the marked point.

The HSS drill can be used for stainless steel with Vc reduced by 40% and ample cooling with a 8–10% emulsion. An HSSE (cobalt) drill of the same diameter is a more efficient option, retaining its hardness up to 650°C.
