Where chips remain in a straight-flute tap

The flute holds the chips until the tap is reversed out

The straight flute runs parallel to the tap axis. There is no helix to carry chips upward. The chamfer cutting edges are not ground at an angle, so they do not push chips downward. Short chips break into fragments and remain in the flute, next to the cutting edges that produced them. They leave the hole only when the tap is backed out. The M15x1 tap has a reduced shank to DIN 374: diameter 12 mm, square size 9 mm.

M15x1 left-hand DIN 374 tap – diagram of chip movement and rotation direction during tapping
1
Straight flute – chips remain in the flute, next to the cutting edges that produced them.
2
Chamfer C: 2–3 incomplete threads on the tapered lead.
3
The tap rotates counterclockwise – this is how it cuts a left-hand thread.
4
Individual fragments exit at the top, onto the workpiece surface.
5
A few fragments fall below the tip and exit through the bottom of the hole.
6
Feed 1 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M15x1 thread.

M15x1 INOX left-hand machine tap – for left-hand threads

This HSSE series model, designed for cutting M15x1 left-hand threads in stainless and structural steels, features a left-hand cutting direction. The M15x1 INOX left-hand machine tap has reversed flute geometry that ensures correct left-hand thread formation. With 5% added cobalt, the tool maintains a hardness of 66 HRC even at cutting zone temperatures up to 650°C. Form C with straight flutes provides general-purpose use in through holes and blind holes. The M15x1 left-hand HSSE machine tap is designed for toolrooms and manufacturers of special components.

Key advantages of the M15x1 left-hand tap

  • Material versatility covering 304 and 316 austenitic stainless steels, structural steels up to 800 MPa, GGG40 ductile cast iron, and 6000 series aluminum alloys
  • Left-hand thread used in components protected against self-loosening, drive shafts and screws securing grinding wheels that rotate clockwise
  • Compatibility with ER25 holders and collets for precise clamping on machining centers with axial compensation and reversible rotation
  • Precision to tolerance class 6H for demanding fit tolerances in series production of mechanical components requiring highly accurate left-hand threads
  • Durability increased by the addition of cobalt in HSSE steel allows cutting 400-500 left-hand threads in structural steel with proper cooling
  • M15x1 general-purpose left-hand machine tap with form C allows tapping of through holes and blind holes without changing the tool or parameters

The M15x1 left-hand machine tap for through holes and blind holes is used in toolrooms and prototype shops for producing special components. Cooling with an oil emulsion at a minimum concentration of 8% or with tapping oil extends tool life by a factor of 2-3. The tap drill diameter for the M15x1 left-hand thread is 14 mm.

Frequently asked questions

The M15x1 left-hand HSSE tap with form C and straight flutes is a general-purpose tool – suitable for both through holes and blind holes. Its design ensures proper chip evacuation in both hole types.

The M15x1 left-hand HSSE tap cuts an internal thread to tolerance class 6H. The 6H designation specifies the permissible deviations of the thread pitch diameter and minor diameter – the digit 6 indicates the tolerance zone width (medium), and the letter H indicates the zone position at the zero line. The 6H tolerance ensures a proper fit with screws to tolerance 6g.

M15x1 left-hand threads are used in components protected against self-loosening, clockwise-rotating drive shafts, and screws securing grinding wheels. They prevent the joint from loosening under vibration.
