How a spiral flute tap evacuates chips from a blind hole

The 35° flute works like a screw conveyor

The flutes of this tap follow a right-hand helix at an angle of 35° to the axis. The tap rotates clockwise and advances into the hole. Chips cut by the chamfer enter the flute, and the helix carries them upward like the screw in a meat grinder. The bottom of the hole stays clean, and the cutting edges do not encounter packed chips. The M7 x1 tap has a reduced shank according to DIN 376: diameter 5.5 mm, square size 4.3 mm.

M7 x1 DIN 376 tap – diagram of chip movement and direction of rotation during tapping
1
The 35° spiral flute carries chips upward from the chamfer.
2
The stepped chip exits the hole and breaks into short pieces.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
Chamfer C: 2–3 incomplete threads on the tapered lead.
5
Clearance below the tap tip – min. 2 thread pitches above the bottom.
6
Feed 1 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M7 x1 thread.

M7 spiral-flute machine tap – for blind holes

The special tap series for the machinery industry includes the M7 spiral flute machine tap with a long shank according to DIN 376. The 6H tolerance ensures the dimensional repeatability required in series production of components with nonstandard diameters. HSSE steel construction with 5% cobalt provides a hardness of 65-67 HRC and heat resistance up to 650°C in the cutting zone. The 35° spiral flute directs chips backward when tapping blind holes in special bodies and housings.

Why choose the M7 spiral flute machine tap

  • Compliance with DIN 376 confirms manufacturing quality and ensures standardized long-shank dimensions compatible with European machine tool holders
  • Designed for special threads covers components with nonstandard diameters required in the machinery industry and special equipment
  • Tolerance class 6H precision guarantees full thread interchangeability and dimensional repeatability in series production of mechanical components
  • Durability of HSSE steel with 5% cobalt allows operation at temperatures up to 650°C without loss of the cutting edge's mechanical properties
  • Form C chamfer for blind holes allows tapping close to the bottom of the hole with a minimal incomplete thread length of 2-3 pitches
  • Compatibility with ER16 and ER20 tool holders and tapping chucks with axial compensation for CNC machining centers

The M7 spiral flute tap is used in the machinery industry and in manufacturing special equipment requiring threads with nonstandard diameters. The standard pitch of the M7 thread is 1 mm, with a tap drill diameter of 6 mm. The tool is compatible with standard coolant emulsions and tapping oils.

Frequently asked questions

The M7 HSSE spiral flute machine tap is suitable for structural steels up to 900 MPa, stainless steels, aluminum and brass. The M7 size is used in industrial pneumatics and special fittings requiring nonstandard threads.

For an M7x1 thread in tolerance class 6H, the tap drill diameter should be 6 mm. The permissible hole diameter range is 6.0-6.15 mm. A smaller hole increases cutting torque and the risk of tool breakage.

Yes, cooling with an oil emulsion at a minimum concentration of 8% or with tapping oil is recommended and extends tool life by a factor of 2-3. Intensive cooling is required when machining stainless steels, while aluminum can be tapped with minimal lubrication.
