How a spiral flute tap evacuates chips from a blind hole

The 40° flute works like a screw conveyor

The flutes of this tap follow a right-hand helix at an angle of 40° to the axis. The tap rotates clockwise and advances into the hole. Chips cut by the chamfer enter the flute, and the helix carries them upward like the screw in a meat grinder. The bottom of the hole stays clean, and the cutting edges do not encounter packed chips. The M14 x2 tap has a reduced shank according to DIN 376: diameter 11 mm, square size 9 mm.

M14 x2 DIN 376 tap – diagram of chip movement and direction of rotation during tapping
1
The 40° spiral flute carries chips upward from the chamfer.
2
The stepped chip exits the hole and breaks into short pieces.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
Chamfer C: 2–3 incomplete threads on the tapered lead.
5
Clearance below the tap tip – min. 2 thread pitches above the bottom.
6
Feed 2 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M14 x2 thread.

M14 spiral-flute machine tap – for blind holes

The tap series designed for series production includes an M14 spiral flute machine tap with a long shank in accordance with DIN 376. Tolerance 6H guarantees the dimensional repeatability required in the automotive and machinery industries. HSSE steel with 5% added cobalt provides a hardness of 65-67 HRC and heat resistance up to 650°C in the cutting zone. The 40° spiral flute directs chips backward when tapping blind holes in engine blocks and gearbox housings.

Why choose the M14 spiral flute machine tap

  • Compliance with DIN 376 confirms manufacturing quality and ensures standardized long-shank dimensions compatible with European machine tool holders
  • Designed for automotive series production includes engine blocks, transmission housings, suspension components, and brake system components
  • Tolerance class 6H precision guarantees full thread interchangeability and dimensional repeatability in high-volume production of mechanical components
  • Durability of HSSE steel with 5% cobalt allows operation at temperatures up to 650°C without loss of the cutting edge's mechanical properties
  • Form C chamfer for blind holes allows tapping close to the bottom of the hole with a minimal incomplete thread length of 2-3 pitches
  • 40° spiral flutes provide aggressive chip evacuation when tapping deep blind holes in cast iron and steel housings

The M14 spiral flute tap is used in the production of engine blocks and industrial fittings requiring leak-tight threaded connections. The standard pitch of the M14 thread is 2 mm, with a tap drill diameter of 12 mm. The tool works with standard coolant emulsions and tapping oils.

Frequently asked questions

The M14 HSSE spiral flute machine tap is suitable for structural steels up to 900 MPa, austenitic stainless steels 304/316, aluminum, brass, and gray cast iron. HSSE steel with 5% cobalt also allows machining of alloy steels with appropriate cooling.

For the M14x2 thread in tolerance class 6H, the recommended tap drill diameter is 12 mm. The hole tolerance range should be within 12.0 to 12.24 mm. Exceeding the upper limit results in an incomplete thread profile and a lower tolerance class.

Yes, cooling with an oil emulsion of at least 8% or with tapping oil is recommended and extends tool life by a factor of 2-3. Intensive cooling is required when machining stainless steels, while aluminum can be tapped with minimum quantity lubrication (MQL).
