How a spiral flute tap evacuates chips from a blind hole

The 35° flute works like a screw conveyor

The flutes of this tap follow a right-hand helix at an angle of 35° to the axis. The tap rotates clockwise and advances into the hole. Chips cut by the chamfer enter the flute, and the helix carries them upward like the screw in a meat grinder. The bottom of the hole stays clean, and the cutting edges do not encounter packed chips. The M16 x2 tap has a reduced shank according to DIN 376: diameter 12 mm, square size 9 mm.

M16 x2 DIN 376 tap – diagram of chip movement and direction of rotation during tapping
1
The 35° spiral flute carries chips upward from the chamfer.
2
The stepped chip exits the hole and breaks into short pieces.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
Chamfer C: 2–3 incomplete threads on the tapered lead.
5
Clearance below the tap tip – min. 2 thread pitches above the bottom.
6
Feed 2 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M16 x2 thread.

M16 spiral flute machine tap – with a 35° spiral flute

The M16 spiral flute machine tap with a long shank is designed for precision tapping of blind holes in series production. Made from HSSE steel with 5% added cobalt, it guarantees a hardness of 65-67 HRC and long cutting edge life, even when machining stainless steels. The 35° spiral flute design directs chips backward, which is essential for blind hole tapping. The long shank in accordance with DIN 376 increases clamping rigidity in machine tool holders. The 6H tolerance guarantees the dimensional repeatability required in industrial production.

Technical data for the M16 spiral flute machine tap

  • Material versatility covering structural steels up to 900 MPa, alloy steels, austenitic stainless steels 304/316, aluminum, and copper alloys
  • Durability of HSSE steel with 5% cobalt allows operation at temperatures up to 650°C in the cutting zone without loss of mechanical properties
  • Compatibility with ER32 and ER40 tool holders and collets for precise clamping on machining centers with axial compensation
  • Precision to tolerance class 6H for demanding fit tolerances in series production of mechanical and structural components subject to stringent requirements
  • Conforms to DIN 376 ensures standardized long shank dimensions and full interchangeability with tools from European manufacturers
  • 35° flute geometry with form C chamfer allows tapping close to the bottom of a blind hole with a minimal incomplete thread length of 2-3 pitches

The M16 spiral flute tap is used in toolrooms and series production for CNC machining of structural components. Cooling with an oil emulsion at a minimum concentration of 8% or with tapping oil extends tool life by a factor of 2-3. The standard pitch of the M16 thread is 2 mm, with a tap drill diameter of 14 mm.

Frequently asked questions

The M16 HSSE spiral flute machine tap is suitable for structural steels up to 900 MPa, austenitic stainless steels 304/316, aluminum, brass, and gray cast iron. HSSE steel with 5% cobalt also allows machining of alloy steels with appropriate cooling.

For the M16x2 thread in tolerance class 6H, the recommended tap drill diameter is 14 mm. The hole tolerance range should be within 14.0 to 14.24 mm. Exceeding the upper limit results in an incomplete thread profile and a lower tolerance class.

Yes, cooling with an oil emulsion of at least 8% or with tapping oil is recommended and extends tool life by a factor of 2-3. Intensive cooling is required when machining stainless steels, while aluminum can be tapped with minimum quantity lubrication (MQL).
