How a spiral flute tap evacuates chips from a blind hole

The 35° flute works like a screw conveyor

The flutes of this tap follow a right-hand helix at an angle of 35° to the axis. The tap rotates clockwise and advances into the hole. Chips cut by the chamfer enter the flute, and the helix carries them upward like the screw in a meat grinder. The bottom of the hole stays clean, and the cutting edges do not encounter packed chips. The M39 x4 tap has a reduced shank according to DIN 376: diameter 32 mm, square size 24 mm.

M39 x4 DIN 376 tap – diagram of chip movement and direction of rotation during tapping
1
The 35° spiral flute carries chips upward from the chamfer.
2
The stepped chip exits the hole and breaks into short pieces.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
Chamfer C: 2–3 incomplete threads on the tapered lead.
5
Clearance below the tap tip – min. 2 thread pitches above the bottom.
6
Feed 4 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M39 x4 thread.

M39 spiral-flute machine tap – for blind holes

The Fra M39 spiral flute machine tap with a long shank is designed for precision tapping of large blind holes in heavy industry. HSSE steel construction with 5% added cobalt guarantees a hardness of 65-67 HRC and long cutting edge life even when machining alloy steels. The 35° spiral flute design directs chips backward, which is essential for blind hole tapping. The long shank in accordance with DIN 376 increases clamping rigidity in machine tool holders. The 6H tolerance guarantees the dimensional repeatability required in industrial production.

Technical data for the M39 spiral flute machine tap

  • Material versatility covering structural steels up to 900 MPa, alloy steels, austenitic stainless steels 304/316, and gray and ductile cast iron
  • Durability of HSSE steel with 5% cobalt allows operation at temperatures up to 650°C in the cutting zone without loss of mechanical properties
  • Compatibility with ER40 holders and collets for precise clamping on machining centers with axial compensation
  • Precision to tolerance class 6H for demanding fit tolerances in series production of structural components and machine housings
  • Conforms to DIN 376 ensures standardized long shank dimensions and full interchangeability with tools from European manufacturers
  • 35° flute geometry with form C chamfer allows tapping close to the bottom of a blind hole with a minimal incomplete thread length of 2-3 pitches

The M39 spiral flute tap is used in heavy industry and in the production of machine housings requiring large internal threads. The standard pitch of the M39 thread is 4 mm, with a tap drill diameter of 35 mm. The tool works with standard coolant emulsions and tapping oils.

Frequently asked questions

The M39 HSSE spiral flute machine tap performs well in structural steels with a tensile strength up to 900 MPa, stainless steels, aluminum, brass, and gray cast iron. Size M39 is used in heavy industry and machine building.

For an M39x4 thread of tolerance class 6H, the recommended tap drill diameter is 35 mm. The hole tolerance range should be 35.0 to 35.35 mm. Exceeding the upper limit results in an incomplete thread profile.

Yes, cooling with an oil emulsion at a minimum concentration of 8% or with tapping oil is recommended and extends tool life by a factor of 2-3. Intensive cooling under pressure is required when machining stainless steels.
