How the type B through-hole chamfer pushes chips down the hole

Chips exit at the bottom instead of returning through the thread

The type B through-hole chamfer has a chip breaker at the tip of the tap – an angled notch in the cutting edges. The chip breaker directs chips down the hole, ahead of the tap tip. The chips curl into a spring shape, break into short pieces and exit the hole on the other side of the workpiece. The threads already cut remain clean because the chips do not pass through them on their way up. The M7 x1 tap has a reduced shank to DIN 376: diameter 6 mm, square size 4.9 mm.

1
Straight flute – chips do not enter it; the flute carries lubricant to the cutting edges.
2
The chip breaker at the tip of the tap directs chips down the hole.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
B chamfer: 3.5–5.5 incomplete threads on the entry taper.
5
The chips break into segments: individual pieces at the top of the hole, with progressively more farther down. They fall out below the workpiece.
6
Feed 1 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M7 x1 thread.

M7 machine tap for through holes – Narex HSSE with a long shank to DIN 376

The Narex M7 machine tap for through holes is a professional tool for cutting M7 internal threads in holes requiring increased clamping rigidity. The long shank according to DIN 376 minimizes tool runout and improves thread quality in the nonstandard M7 size. HSSE high-speed steel construction with 5% cobalt provides a hardness of 65-67 HRC and high heat resistance up to 650°C in the cutting zone.

Why choose the Narex M7 machine tap with a long shank

  • The Narex brand as a renowned cutting tool manufacturer with a long tradition, guarantees the highest manufacturing quality and consistent performance
  • Nonstandard M7 size fills the gap between the common M6 and M8 sizes in designs with specific requirements
  • Long shank to DIN 376 provides greater clamping rigidity and improved tool guidance, which is important when tapping deep holes
  • HSSE steel with 5% cobalt ensures a hardness of 65-67 HRC and heat resistance up to 650°C, extending cutting edge life
  • Compatibility with ER16 and ER20 tool holders and tapping heads for CNC machining centers with synchronous tapping
  • Metric pitch of 1 mm in accordance with DIN 13 for M7 coarse threads, with a recommended tap drill diameter of 6 mm

The Narex M7 machine tap with a long shank is suitable for toolrooms and prototype shops producing components with specific strength requirements. Form B with straight flutes directs chips forward. Cooling with an emulsion containing EP additives at a concentration of 8-10% is recommended.

Frequently asked questions

DIN 371 specifies a short shank, while DIN 376 specifies a long shank. The long shank provides greater clamping rigidity and improved tool guidance, which is recommended for deep tapping on CNC centers.

Narex is a reputable manufacturer with a long tradition, offering tools with consistent quality and repeatable geometric specifications. Narex taps offer good value for money.

Yes, M6, M7 and M8 coarse threads all have a pitch of 1 mm according to DIN 13. They differ only in nominal diameter and tap drill diameter.
