How a spiral flute tap evacuates chips from a blind hole

The 35° flute works like a screw conveyor

The flutes of this tap follow a right-hand helix at an angle of 35° to the axis. The tap rotates clockwise and advances into the hole. Chips cut by the chamfer enter the flute, and the helix carries them upward like the screw in a meat grinder. The bottom of the hole stays clean, and the cutting edges do not encounter packed chips. The M27 x3 tap has a reduced shank according to DIN 376: diameter 20 mm, square size 16 mm.

M27 x3 DIN 376 tap – diagram of chip movement and direction of rotation during tapping
1
The 35° spiral flute carries chips upward from the chamfer.
2
The stepped chip exits the hole and breaks into short pieces.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
Chamfer C: 2–3 incomplete threads on the tapered lead.
5
Clearance below the tap tip – min. 2 thread pitches above the bottom.
6
Feed 3 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M27 x3 thread.

M27 spiral-flute machine tap – for blind holes

The M27 machine tap with a coarse pitch of 3 mm produces internal threads of tolerance class 6H in blind holes. The tool complies with DIN 376 – the shank, reduced to a diameter of 20 mm, passes through the previously cut thread, allowing deeper tapping without interference. The 35° spiral flute carries chips upward toward the spindle instead of pushing them to the bottom of the hole. The form C chamfer spans 2 to 3 threads, allowing the thread to extend close to the bottom. The material is HSSE high-speed steel with 5% cobalt and a hardness of 63–65 HRC, retaining its cutting properties at temperatures up to approximately 600 °C.

Technical specifications of the M27 machine tap

  • Material range includes structural steels up to 900 MPa, alloy steels, austenitic stainless steels 304 and 316, and aluminum and copper alloys
  • Cobalt addition increases tempering resistance, allowing the cutting edge to retain its hardness longer when machining difficult-to-cut materials
  • Reduced shank Ø 20 mm with a square drive fits tapping holders with axial compensation and ER collets
  • Tolerance class 6H corresponds to the standard accuracy of threaded connections in machine building and ensures interchangeability with fasteners with 6g threads
  • 35° spiral flute with form C chamfer limits the incomplete thread at the bottom of the hole to 2–3 threads
  • Flute length 38 mm with an overall length of 160 mm allows tapping to a depth of up to 2 diameters

The M27 tap is used in machine building, welded structures, and repairs of components with large cross sections. The tap hole is drilled with a Ø 24 mm drill bit. When tapping blind holes, cooling with tapping oil and withdrawing the tool to break the chips are recommended.

Frequently asked questions

The M27 HSSE spiral-flute machine tap performs well in structural steels up to 900 MPa, austenitic stainless steels 304/316, aluminum, brass, and gray cast iron. Size M27 is used in steel structures and heavy machinery manufacturing.

For an M27x3 thread of tolerance class 6H, the recommended tap drill diameter is 24 mm. The hole tolerance range should be 24.0 to 24.28 mm. Exceeding the upper limit results in an incomplete thread profile.

Yes, cooling with an oil emulsion of at least 8% or with tapping oil is recommended and extends tool life by a factor of 2-3. Intensive cooling is required when machining stainless steels, while aluminum can be tapped with minimum quantity lubrication (MQL).
